What are the responsibilities and job description for the In Home Caregiver - Tutor AAC position at Personal through FMS?
Job Overview
We are looking for a dedicated and energetic individual to join our son’s support team as an In-Home Caregiver and Tutor. Our 11-year-old son is a bright, non-speaking student on the autism spectrum who is homeschooled and performing at a 6th-grade academic level.
This is an in-person role in our Dublin home that combines high-level academic tutoring with compassionate caregiving. Prior experience working specifically with non-speaking individuals is highly preferred. Your primary goal is to be a consistent communication partner, helping him find his voice through AAC modeling while keeping him challenged and engaged with his grade-level schoolwork. This position is ideal for someone passionate about neurodiversity-affirming care and speech-language support.
Duties
- AAC Modeling & Communication: This is the most vital part of the role. You will actively use and model his AAC device throughout the day to help him communicate effectively and build language skills.
- Academic Tutoring: Follow and implement the school-provided 6th-grade curriculum. You will guide him through his lessons (Math, ELA, Science, etc.) and adapt activities to keep him motivated.
- Floortime (DIR) Engagement: Implement relationship-based Floortime strategies to build social-emotional connections. This involves following his lead, tuning into his interests, and opening/closing "circles of communication" to foster genuine engagement.
- Personal Care: Provide assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), specifically including toileting and clean-up, as well as help with mobility as needed.
- Meal Supervision: Offer prepared meals and snacks at scheduled times, ensuring he eats on time and stays hydrated throughout the session.
- Local Transportation: Drive him to nearby classes or community activities to foster social interaction and community involvement.
Requirements
- Experience with Non-Speaking ASD: Essential experience working with non-speaking children on the autism spectrum. You should understand the importance of alternative communication and "presuming competence."
- Academic Ability: Must be comfortable and competent teaching 6th-grade level subjects.
- Relationship-First Mindset: Ability to implement Floortime by being present, patient, and responsive to his emotional and sensory cues.
- Willingness to Learn: While we value experience, we will provide specific training on his AAC system and relationship-based Floortime methodology.
- Compassionate & Patient: You must be comfortable with "wait times" and respect his unique way of processing and communicating.
- Logistics: Must have a clean driving record, a reliable vehicle, and be able to pass a background check.
