Personal Caregiver/Companion

❤️ We’re hoping to find a special person to help our friend Debbie. ❤️

Debbie lives in Unionville, CT, and has lived independently in her own apartment for more than 40 years. She uses a motorized wheelchair and has very limited muscle control because of a neurological condition. She also has a severe speech impairment, which can make it difficult for people who don’t know her to understand what she is saying.

But here’s the important part: Debbie is smart, funny, independent, and has a wonderful personality. Her physical disability can sometimes cause people to make assumptions about her that simply aren’t true. Getting to know Debbie means discovering the person behind the disability — and she is absolutely worth getting to know.

Debbie has always loved having a cat as a companion, and she’s also a gardener who enjoys her plants and the outdoors. She has managed her own life for decades, but as she gets older, she needs a little more help to continue living independently.

We’re looking for someone kind, patient, attentive, and dependable who is willing to take the time to get to know Debbie — including taking the time to learn her speech and understand what she’s saying. Patience, a good sense of humor, and a genuine interest in getting to know her would go a long way!

Some of the help Debbie needs:

• Deep cleaning her small one-bedroom apartment

• Some lifting and moving of things around the apartment

• Helping with basic household repairs and projects

• Occasional transportation to appointments and errands

• Being able to drive a van occasionally

• Providing backup when another caregiver is unavailable

• Helping with her gardening — or learning alongside her!

• And, perhaps most importantly, being a friendly and caring companion

This would start as a part-time position with flexible hours, with the schedule worked out around the right person’s availability.

Pay: $20–$22 per hour

We’re not necessarily looking for someone with a long list of credentials. We’re looking for someone with a good heart, patience, reliability, and a willingness to see Debbie for who she really is.

Because Debbie’s speech can make telephone conversations difficult, I will be the initial contact for anyone interested. Debbie and I will meet and interview potential candidates together so that she can be part of the process and we can find someone who is a good fit for her.
