My client, a leading land development and Civil Engineering company located in Brea, CA is seeking an experienced Land Surveying Manager to join their team.
The company provides land surveying, soil sampling and grading and drainage services to both public and private clients in the local area. They are now seeking a Land Surveying Manager to lead their Land Surveying team.
The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years' experience in lang surveying along with demonstrated ability to manage a team of party cheifs, coordinators and admin staff, previous experience leading a team of 10 or more is essential.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Minimum of 7 years' experience as a Land Surveyor
- Professional Land Surveyor Certification is highly desirable
- Previous experience manging a team of at least 8 personnel.
- Strong knwoledge of land surveying the california area
- Experienced in project oversight
- Strong mentorship skills
- Able to lead the LS department to success.
- Strong knowledge of CA codes and regulation
Duties & Role
1. Technical Oversight & Quality Control
The manager ensures all measurements and data collection meet the high precision standards required for California engineering and construction.
- Data Analysis: Review and verify field data, including geodetic measurements, topographic features, and boundary markers.
- Technology Management: Oversee the use of advanced equipment like GPS/GNSS, total stations, and laser scanners, as well as software like AutoCAD Civil 3D or GIS.
- Deliverable Review: Approve final maps, parcel maps, Records of Survey, and ALTA (American Land Title Association) surveys to ensure accuracy before they are stamped and signed.
- Monumentation: Direct the establishment of permanent reference points and markers to define property lines officially.
2. Legal & Regulatory Compliance
California has strict statutes regarding land use. A manager must navigate these complex legal frameworks.
- Statutory Compliance: Ensure all work adheres to the Land Surveyors’ Act, the Subdivision Map Act, and local ordinances.
- Record Research: Direct the research of public records, deeds, and historical survey data to resolve boundary discrepancies or easements.
- Legal Descriptions: Write or oversee the drafting of legal descriptions of land for use in deeds, leases, or other legal documents.
- Expert Testimony: Occasionally serve as an expert witness in court cases involving property disputes or boundary litigation.
3. Project & Business Management
This side of the role is focused on the "Manager" title, dealing with the logistics and financial health of the survey department.
- Resource Allocation: Schedule and coordinate field crews (led by Party Chiefs) and office staff to meet project deadlines.
- Proposal & Budgeting: Prepare cost estimates, draft proposals for new contracts, and monitor the project's profit/loss.
- Client Relations: Act as the primary contact for developers, government agencies, and engineering firms to discuss project scope and updates.
- Business Development: Identify new leads and opportunities to expand the firm’s surveying services within the California market.
4. Leadership & Mentorship
Since licensure is a long process in California, managers play a vital role in developing the next generation.
- Staff Mentorship: Provide guidance to junior surveyors and technicians working toward their own PLS or LSIT (Land Surveyor in Training) certifications.
- Safety Coordination: Ensure all field teams follow California OSHA (Cal/OSHA) standards, especially when working in hazardous terrain or near active construction.
