Summary Objective
Person County Government is seeking a dedicated and service-oriented Veterans Services Officer to support local veterans and their families. This role is responsible for delivering a broad range of administrative, advocacy, and counseling services to help individuals access the federal, state, and local benefits they have earned through military service.
The Veterans Services Officer serves as a trusted resource and liaison, guiding clients through complex benefits processes, assisting with claims preparation and submission, and providing accurate information on eligibility requirements. The position also involves maintaining detailed records, coordinating with partner agencies, and ensuring timely follow-up on all cases.

The starting salary will be determined with consideration given to both the candidate's educational background and relevant work experience.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record per County policy.
This is a non-exempt position working 37.5 hours weekly/1950 hours annually.
Essential Functions
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Counsels veterans and their dependents and assists them in applying to the Veterans Administration for pension, compensations, burial allowance, medical services, education, and housing loans, death benefits, and other benefits.
- Assists veterans with disability applications and assuring that necessary records, medical reports, and materials are collected and submitted.
- Assists veterans and their families with a wide variety of paperwork processing and expediting; recommends acceptable documentation and sources to obtain documentation for applications and claims.
- Interprets, applies, explains, and researches various regulations and benefits.
- Clarifies problems and claims by contacting national, regional, state, and district veteran’s representative, discussing the options and resolving issues.
- Establishes and maintains a variety of records, reports, and applicant files.
- Prepares documentation for appeals of benefit denials; the County Veterans Service Officer has the option to appear with veterans or dependents before administrative agencies or courts.
- Makes presentations to community groups and veteran organizations as outreach on veteran’s services.
- Refers veterans and dependents to other social service agencies which provide required assistance.
- Orders office supplies and sends requests to pay bills to Finance.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
- Associate’s Degree in Human or Social Services or related discipline.
- Four (4) years of veteran’s service work or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Certifications issued by NC Department of Veteran’s Affairs; Recertifications annually.
Person County conducts pre-employment screening on candidates. Job offers are conditional pending the following:
- A pre-employment drug screen for all candidates. Positions designated by Person County as Safety Sensitive are also subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- A background check for all candidates. Some positions also require a credit check.
- Additional screening and testing required for some positions.
