SEWAGE PLANT AND WASTEWATER COLLECTION LINE OPERATOR TRAINEE

Job Summary:

The Sewage Plant and Collection Line Operator Trainee is an entry-level position designed for individuals interested in pursuing a career in wastewater treatment and sewage system maintenance. The trainee will work under the supervision of an experienced operator, gaining hands-on experience in the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of sewage treatment facilities and collection lines. Participates in on-the-job training to become certified as an operator of a sewage treatment plant and collection line system; and performs other duties as required. The goal is to develop the skills and knowledge required to become a certified operator and contribute to the efficient and compliant operation of the wastewater system.

Key Responsibilities:

Training and Development:

• Participate in on-the-job training to learn the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of wastewater treatment equipment and collection systems.
• Assist experienced operators in collecting and testing water samples to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
• Learn to monitor flow rates, pressure levels, and chemical treatments under supervision.
• Employee will be required to attend training through the Kentucky Division of Water and become a Certified Wastewater Treatment and Collection Line Operator.
• Other duties as assigned

Assisting in Maintenance:

• Support the inspection, maintenance, and repair of plant equipment and collection lines as directed by senior operators.
• Assist in troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues related to wastewater treatment processes.
• Maintain accurate records of training activities and work performed during the trainee period.

Collection Line Operations Support:

• Aid in inspecting and maintaining sewer lines, lift stations, and other components of the wastewater collection system.
• Assist in responding to emergencies such as line breaks, blockages, or system malfunctions, following the guidance of senior staff.
• Learn the procedures for the installation, repair, and replacement of sewer lines and related infrastructure.

Compliance and Safety Awareness:

• Follow all safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while on duty.
• Learn about local, state, and federal environmental regulations related to wastewater treatment.
• Assist in preparing basic reports and logs, developing skills in record-keeping and documentation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Education: High school diploma or GED required. Interest in wastewater treatment, environmental science, or a related field is preferred.

· Experience: No prior experience required; on-the-job training will be provided.

· Licenses/Certifications:

o Valid driver's license required.

o Willingness to pursue state certification as a wastewater treatment plant and collection line operator.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

· Willingness to learn and develop technical skills in wastewater treatment.

· Basic mechanical aptitude and interest in troubleshooting equipment

· Ability to follow instructions, work as part of a team, and communicate effectively.

· Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a safe and compliant work environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

· Trainee may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, unpleasant odors, and varying weather conditions.

· Physical requirements include standing, walking, climbing ladders, lifting heavy objects, and working in confined spaces.

· May require occasional on-call availability for emergencies, with support from senior staff.
