Personal Care Assistant for Exceptional Children Services
A temporary position in the Perquimans County Schools system, ending June 6, 2025.
This role involves providing individual assistance to students with special needs, allowing them to access the curriculum and educational environment. The employee accompanies the student throughout the school day, ensuring their safety and assisting with basic human functions such as breathing, toileting, eating/feeding, and behavioral management. They collaborate with the supervising teacher to administer and/or monitor therapy, medication, and special treatment required by the student.
The Personal Care Assistant may also be directed to perform secondary job responsibilities during teacher workdays or student absences. They assist teachers with clerical duties as needed and report to a Principal and/or supervising teacher.

Key Responsibilities:
- Accompanying students with constant observation, intervention, and assistance to ensure their safety and well-being.
- Collaborating with supervising teachers to administer and/or monitor medication, therapy, and special treatment.
- Daily data collection and maintaining records of student progress.
- Performing various clerical duties as needed, including maintaining a clean and orderly classroom environment.
- Maintaining student confidentiality.
Requirements:
- High School diploma and experience working with physically and/or behaviorally disabled children.
- Ability to lift up to 80 pounds occasionally and/or up to 30 pounds frequently.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to adapt to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- General knowledge of activities performed by lead teachers.
- General knowledge of daily routines of the classroom.
- Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students.
- Ability to motivate students.
- Ability to maintain a clean and orderly environment.
