What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Defender position at Periscope Legal?
Periscope Legal is seeking a full-time public defender to join our growing firm. We have offices in Oak Harbor and Anacortes that provide public defense services for those cities and are willing to pay moving costs for prospective applicants. Providing vigilant representation to indigent clients is our mission. In-person court appearances are required but hybrid work is available on days without court once the attorney has established they can meet job responsibilities. Outside of court, applicants will enjoy coastal views and outdoor activities on the coast of beautiful Whidbey Island and Anacortes.
We are looking for an attorney capable of representing clients from arraignment through trial and sentencing. While criminal law experience is a plus, new attorneys and February 2026 bar takers are encouraged to apply. We provide high-level and hands-on training in all phases of criminal practice including client meetings, arraignment, pretrial hearings, trial preparation, plea negotiations, jury trial and sentencing. In addition to on the job training, we offer payment of bar licensing dues and CLE's, including statewide conferences for defense attorneys. The primary caseload consists of low-level misdemeanors and would be a great learning opportunity for new attorneys.
Salary DOE, starting at $90,000. Full-time with benefits: health insurance, dental insurance, generous paid time off, 401K eligibility with employer match, bar dues and student loan payments up to $2,000 annually covered.
