Roanoke, Virginia

Carilion Clinic (CC), Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM), and the Department of Surgery are seeking an accomplished surgical oncologist to serve as Chief of the Division of Surgical and Breast Oncology.

This is an exceptional leadership opportunity to direct a growing academic division consisting of three surgeons and four advanced practice providers within a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary cancer program. The Division Chief will lead the clinical, educational, and research missions of the division while helping shape the future of cancer care across western Virginia and the surrounding region.

The successful candidate will join a physician-led academic health system supported by state-of-the-art technology, advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities, and the planned opening of the new Carilion Taubman Cancer Center in 2027–2028.

About The Program

Based at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, a 763-bed Level I Trauma Center and academic medical center, the Division provides comprehensive surgical oncology services to more than one million patients across a large rural, multi-state region.

In addition to services at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the Division supports patients throughout the Carilion system, including:

  • Carilion New River Valley Medical Center
  • Carilion Giles Community Hospital
  • Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital

The Division currently operates a regional clinic location with plans for future expansion. Surgeons enjoy a broad and complex clinical practice with opportunities to perform the full spectrum of surgical oncology procedures.

  • Advance multidisciplinary cancer care initiatives across the health system
  • Foster excellence in clinical outcomes, quality, and patient experience
  • Support faculty development, mentorship, and recruitment
  • Expand research and scholarly activity in collaboration with VTCSOM and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute
  • Strengthen educational programs for medical students, residents, fellows, and advanced practice providers
  • Promote collaboration across surgical, medical, and radiation oncology services

Academic Environment

  • 7 hospitals
  • 298 outpatient practice sites
  • More than 950 physicians representing 85 specialties

Academic and research opportunities are abundant through close partnerships with:

  • Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
  • Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC

Faculty actively participate in the education of medical students, residents, fellows, allied health learners, and undergraduate and graduate students. The selected candidate will receive a faculty appointment at VTCSOM commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Qualifications

Required:

  • MD or DO degree
  • Board Certified in Surgery
  • Fellowship training in Surgical Oncology
  • Minimum of five years of progressive academic surgical leadership experience
  • Academic rank of Associate Professor or higher (or qualifications consistent with such appointment)
