Director of Medical/Surgical Services (Med/Surg) Position Details
The Director of Med/Surg is a Registered Nurse (RN) leader responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and performance of the Medical/Surgical department. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, patient and family-centered care through effective leadership, collaboration, and operational oversight. Working in close partnership with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), the Director fosters a strong interdisciplinary team environment where nursing plays a central role in patient outcomes. This position provides direct supervision of department staff and serves as both a clinical and operational leader within the organization. In the future, this position will also include oversight and management of the Cardiac Rehab department.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, mentor, and support nursing staff through recruitment, hiring, orientation, ongoing education, and performance management
- Develop, monitor, and evaluate staff competencies and performance in accordance with organizational policies and standards
- Oversee daily operations of the Med/Surg department, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care
- Collaborate with providers, interdisciplinary teams, and support services to coordinate care and maintain a patient- and family-centered approach
- Organize workflows and resources to optimize department efficiency, including staffing, budget management, and equipment utilization
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, data collection, and analysis to enhance patient outcomes and operational performance
- Maintain clinical competency and provide direct patient care as needed, serving as a resource and role model for staff
- Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and best practices aligned with regulatory and accreditation standards
- Foster effective communication, teamwork, and a positive workplace culture, including conducting regular staff meetings and addressing performance concerns
- Represent the department in organizational committees, community outreach, strategic planning, and other initiatives as assigned
What You Offer
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master's in Nursing preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of Medical/Surgical nursing experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of nursing leadership experience.
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Minnesota.
Work Schedule
- Full-time (1.0 FTE), exempt
- Typical schedule: Monday-Friday, 7am-3:30pm
- Occasionally includes evening and/or night hours for educational activities and staff rounding
- Participates in the Resource Nurse rotation for after-hours staffing and clinical support (4-week rotation)
