What are the responsibilities and job description for the Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner position at Pepperdine University?

The physician assistant/nurse practitioner is a skilled health care professional who, under the supervision of a physician, performs a variety of medical, diagnostic, and therapeutic services. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the physician assistant also coordinates and participates in outreach activities as well as assists the directors in various projects.

Duties

  • Provide direct patient medical care in acute and selective chronic illnesses.
  • Examine and diagnose patients, prescribe and administer medical treatment, order examinations, analyses, x-rays, physical therapy, and prescription drugs.
  • Document all medical care via patient's EHR and progress notes in a timely manner per protocols, perform minor surgical procedures, provide continuing care of patients, obtain appropriate consultations and arrange appropriate transfers and follow-ups, and provide patient education to support self-care and health maintenance. Review reports, charts, records, and the general progress of patient clinical care.
  • Maintain patient records and reports according to standards required by HIPAA, the State, University, and Pepperdine Student Health Center. Prepare reports and related correspondence regarding patient care and condition. Respect and guard confidentiality of patients and staff in all aspects of clinical care, documentation, and correspondence.
  • Comply with all policies and procedures of Pepperdine Student Health Center, Pepperdine University, as well as all State and Federal professional legal requirements: Maintain current California licensure and DEA certification; Maintain CPR, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and First Aid certification, as well as appropriate skills for all approved clinical privileges. Be familiar with and abide by the policies and procedures of the Pepperdine Student Health Center. Be familiar with and abide by the specific safety procedures of Pepperdine Student Health Center, including OSHA guidelines, and conduct work practices in a manner which respects the health and safety of patients and staff.
  • Communicate in a warm, caring, respectful manner with patients, coworkers, and administrators. Listen effectively and respond with behavior conducive to good public relations. Work cooperatively with others in the provision of the highest quality patient care and perform at all times in the best interest of all patients. Based on best practices, all staff are to follow vaccine and titer requirements for immunity. Serve as a member of Critical Support Personnel, those staff who we need to assist during an emergency and SHC Emergency Response Team, and if safe to do so, provide assistance overnight as needed. Perform all of the above with a sense of compassion toward students and coworkers in concurrence with the University, Student Affairs, and Student Health Center Mission.
  • Represent the Student Health Center at University meetings/special programs. Actively participate in educational outreach programs for students. Provide input on outreach activities focused on common health concerns related to the population and health trends seen on campus. Review educational material being shared with students when appropriate. Work with other SHC staff members to create and update medical policies and procedures. Work with other SHC staff on Electronic Health Record updates and implementation of new modules. Work with other SHC staff members in Emergency Preparedness. Acts as Lead on the Quality Improvement Committee.
  • Assist in the supervision of nursing personnel in the back office, as delegated by Clinic Director or Medical Director. Coordination of clinical services on a day-to-day basis. Continuously monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures. Assist the Directors in researching current health trends and practices, as well as developing and maintaining clinical protocols in accordance with current standards of care. Assist personnel in adhering to policies and procedures, including maintenance of government regulations, laboratory, and machinery. Understand the correct procedure for all back office functions consistent with CLIA Lab Licensure. Coordinates Quality Assurance Studies (QA) for back-office procedures. Assist in the recruitment of nurses and other back-office personnel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Physician Assistant: Master of Physician Assistant (MSPA). Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation. Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP. Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of California. Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA). DEA license, or ability to obtain DEA license within 30 days of start date required. A minimum of 1 year of experience as a PA in college health, primary care, ambulatory care, or urgent care setting.

Nurse Practitioner: Master of Nursing Degree (MSN). Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of California. Current State of California Registered Nurse Practitioner Furnishing number required. National Certification (AANP or ANCC) as a Nurse Practitioner. DEA license, or ability to obtain DEA license within 30 days of start date required. A minimum of 1 year of experience as an NP in college health, primary care, ambulatory care, or urgent care setting. Attend either a regional or national conference as agreed by the Director, annually, to maintain licensure requirements. Collaborate with other professionals in college health. Maintain up-to-date California licensure. Maintain CPR, AED, and First Aid certification. Maintains professionalism, good judgment sense, and confidentiality; Ability to interact with a variety of people both in-person and on the telephone, especially in regard to ill or injured students, their parents, faculty, and staff; Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; Excellent organization and time management skills; Ability to prioritize workload and delegate responsibility accordingly; Ability to work in a very fast-paced setting with multiple demands that often occur at the same time; Exercises cultural competency and respectful consideration in a student population representing diverse cultures; Perform all of the above with a sense of compassion toward students and coworkers in concurrence with the University, Student Affairs, and Student Health Center Mission.

As a staff member in the Student Affairs department who works closely with students, this person serves as a Christian role model to students. Must have a personal faith in Jesus Christ, active involvement in a local church, and demonstrate support for the Christian mission of the University-seeking to help students develop lives of purpose, service, and leadership. Proficiency with Google Suite applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience using an Electronic Health Record system; charting and developing templates. Shall maintain a clean, neat, and professional appearance at all times in accordance with Pepperdine’s mission and image; Adjusts work assignments as needed; Observes appropriate conduct standards; Sees patients in a timely fashion; Maintains attendance and punctuality; Shall notify the M.D. of any policy and procedural problems, scheduling difficulties, employee matters, or State or Federal Standards problems; All work produced shall be neat and professional in quality; Shall be conscientious in the performance of all job duties; Shall deal with stressful situations in a calm manner; Appropriately delegates tasks to subordinates; Encourages employees to follow the appropriate chain of command.
