Drama/Performing Arts Teacher of Exceptional Students

Major Function

The primary function of the teacher is to provide specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities, ensuring they receive an equitable education tailored to their individual needs. This role involves collaborating with the ESE Team to participate in the development and implementation of individualized education plans (IEPs), collaborating with support staff, and fostering a classroom environment that promotes academic, social, and emotional growth.

In addition, the Drama Teacher provides instruction in theatre arts across grades 3–12, using drama and performance to enhance communication skills, creativity, and social-emotional development for students with disabilities.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Plans lessons consistent with state and Pepin Academies curriculum framework(s), including acting, movement, voice, and performance, adapted to meet diverse student needs
  • Ensures compliance with school, state, and federal regulations regarding the education of students with disabilities
  • Supports Pepin Academies’ mission and vision
  • Understands and demonstrates knowledge of Exceptional Student Education
  • Follows policies established in the Pepin Academies Employee Handbook
  • Observes confidentiality relating to students, teachers, and school
  • Performs with minimum supervision
  • Communicates effectively with students and parents to increase student achievement
  • Responds to and acts appropriately upon constructive criticism
  • Engages in self-assessment and participates in professional development activities to stay current in best practices for special and/or theatre arts education
  • Uses instructional time efficiently and effectively to maximize student learning and engagement
  • Incorporates performance-based instruction to support student engagement, collaboration, and self-expression
  • Presents subject matter effectively, using technology where appropriate and available, while using appropriate skills and strategies within the Teacher Evaluation Framework to promote the creative/critical thinking capabilities of students
  • Uses drama strategies to support language development, social interaction, and confidence in students with disabilities
  • Uses supportive data to arrive at a grade or indication of student progress within an appropriate timeframe and uses technology to manage systems of instruction, record keeping, and reporting systems where appropriate and available
  • Establishes and maintains standards for acceptance for acceptable student behavior while maintaining a structured and positive classroom environment conducive to learning
  • Maintains a safe and supportive environment that encourages creativity, participation, and respectful performance behavior
  • Collects student data for progress monitoring and reports student progress towards IEP goals.
  • Provides input for the development of student IEP and eligibility meetings with parents and appropriate school and agency personnel.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and implements all requirements
  • Ensure timely submission of planning notes and lesson plans in accordance with school deadlines and guidelines
  • Supervise teacher assistant in providing instruction for students, as required
  • Provides transition planning for students with disabilities, as required
  • Maintain a valid and current Florida teaching certificate, adhering to all renewal and professional development requirements as mandated by the Florida Department of Education
  • Plans and facilitates student performances, including a minimum of one secondary performance per semester (including a spring musical) and elementary performances such as a winter concert and spring production; schedules and supervises after-school rehearsals, as needed for secondary students
  • Other responsibilities as directed by administration


Pepin Academies offers partially subsidized onsite childcare for staff members, infant up to school age.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from a fully accredited college or university.

Possession of, or eligibility for, a Florida Educators certificate required by the Florida Department of Education. This includes both certification in the appropriate exceptional student area(s) and any content certification as required by the State of Florida.

Prior experience or background in theatre, drama, or performing arts preferred.
