What are the responsibilities and job description for the Experienced Barista position at Peoples Coffee Santa Cruz?
You know how everybody at that bar on Cheers knows your name? That's Peoples. Same corner of Live Oak for 21 years, same regulars rolling in every morning - and they will know your name by your second shift. They're funny, they're loyal, and they take real care of the people who take care of them. The tip jar rewards a barista who runs a great bar.
This is not a headphones-in, hide-behind-the-machine coffee job. The espresso matters - a lot - but the show out front matters just as much.
A GREAT SHIFT HERE LOOKS LIKE:
You open your mouth. You greet the door before it closes. You remember that Dave gets a double cap and his dog gets a pup cup. You talk while you steam. You say "grab a croissant with that - they came out ten minutes ago" and mean it. You make drinks fast and to recipe, keep your bar clean without being asked, and you're here at 5:30 when the schedule says 5:30 - because the morning line and your teammates are counting on it.
WHAT YOU NEED WALKING IN:
- Real barista experience on a manual espresso machine
- you can dial in, pull a proper shot, and steam silky milk. Push-button machine experience alone won't cut it here.
- A personality that fills the room. Shy is fine in life; it doesn't work behind our bar.
- Reliability. On time, every time, weekends and holidays included. - 18 , able to stand a full shift and lift 25 lbs.
WHAT YOU GET:
- $16.90-$19.50/hr base depending on experience, plus tips on top - generous regulars, and the better you take care of them, the better they take care of you
- Free drinks on shift plus a bagel or croissant sandwich on us, every shift
- Paid sick time, employee discount, paid training on our bar and POS
- 3-5 days/week, part- or full-time - morning shifts wrap by early-to-mid afternoon, so your day isn't gone - Two locations a short hop apart: Live Oak (1200 17th Ave) and our new Atrium Cafe (701 Ocean St)
We're building a crew that's sticking around Santa Cruz - this is a real job with regulars who become YOUR regulars, not a semester gig.
THE INTERVIEW:
COME MAKE ME A COFFEE. No trial week, no hoops. A cappuccino, a flat white, five minutes of conversation. If you can make a great drink and make me laugh while you do it, you're most of the way hired.
