Role Description The Controller, Corporate Accounting and Finance, is a full-time, on-site role based in San Luis Obispo, CA. This role oversees corporate accounting functions, including general ledger management, month-end and year-end close processes, and preparation of accurate and timely financial statements. The Controller is responsible for managing financial reporting, ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards and nonprofit regulations, and coordinating audits with external auditors. Day-to-day responsibilities include supervising accounting staff, reviewing journal entries and reconciliations, monitoring cash flow, supporting budgeting and forecasting activities, and providing financial analysis to leadership. The role also involves developing and improving internal controls, implementing best practices in financial operations, and collaborating with program and administrative teams to support strategic decision-making.
Qualifications
- Strong accounting expertise, including experience with general ledger accounting and preparation of financial statements.
- A minimum of five years of management experience in a comparable environment.
- Experience in and general knowledge of personal computers with a high level of proficiency using Excel, Word, Sage, or equivalent accounting software.
- Proficiency in finance and financial reporting, with the ability to interpret results and provide clear guidance to leadership.
- Demonstrated analytical skills to evaluate financial data, identify trends, and support budgeting and forecasting.
- Solid understanding of accounting principles (GAAP), internal controls, and compliance requirements, ideally within a nonprofit or housing-related environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent certification is preferred.
- Experience supervising or leading accounting teams and collaborating across departments.
- Advanced proficiency with accounting software and Excel; familiarity with nonprofit financial systems is beneficial.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines on-site.
