People Architects is partnering with a Chemical Manufacturing company to recruit an EHS Specialist.

Safety, environmental responsibility, innovation, and operational excellence are at the heart of our client's chemical manufacturing operations. The company is committed to protecting its employees, the surrounding community, and the environment while delivering high-quality products and services.

With a strong emphasis on workplace safety and continuous improvement, employees are encouraged to take ownership of safety practices, proactively identify hazards, and collaborate to maintain a safe, productive, and environmentally responsible manufacturing environment.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a hands-on Site Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist to join the team and support environmental compliance, workplace safety, occupational health, emergency preparedness, and wastewater treatment operations at the manufacturing facility.

Reporting directly to the EHS Manager, this position works closely with plant leadership, operations, maintenance, and employees across multiple shifts to implement EHS programs, identify and reduce risks, maintain regulatory compliance, and strengthen workplace safety.

The ideal candidate brings practical manufacturing EHS experience, a strong understanding of environmental and safety regulations, and the ability to work independently while building collaborative relationships across all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • EHS Programs & Regulatory Compliance: Support the implementation and continuous improvement of site EHS programs, ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, RCRA, Ohio regulations, and company policies. Programs include confined space entry, hazard communication, stormwater compliance, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, emergency preparedness, and other applicable safety and environmental requirements.
  • Environmental & Wastewater Compliance: Support industrial wastewater treatment operations, including neutralization systems, sampling programs, wastewater permit compliance, environmental reporting, and coordination with Ohio EPA requirements. Ohio EPA Wastewater/Water Reclamation Operator Certification (Class A or higher) is a plus.
  • Facility Inspections & Risk Assessments: Conduct routine facility inspections, audits, safety observations, and risk assessments to identify hazards, evaluate compliance, and coordinate corrective actions with plant personnel.
  • Employee Training: Develop, coordinate, and deliver EHS training for employees, contractors, and new hires. Provide periodic training, toolbox talks, and safety meetings for second- and third-shift personnel as operational needs require.
  • Incident Investigation & Corrective Actions: Participate in incident investigations, near-miss reviews, and root cause analyses. Document findings, track corrective and preventive actions, and support efforts to prevent future incidents.
  • Hazardous Waste Management: Support hazardous waste characterization, storage, transportation, and disposal activities in accordance with applicable EPA, RCRA, and state regulations. Maintain accurate EHS documentation, regulatory reports, and records in accordance with established requirements.
  • Safety Culture & Employee Engagement: Collaborate with plant leadership, cross-functional teams, and the EHS Committee to strengthen employee engagement, promote safe work practices, and support continuous improvement in environmental, health, and safety performance.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required, with a minimum of three (3) years of Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant work experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations, hazardous materials management, industrial hygiene principles, incident investigation, risk assessments, and environmental compliance.
  • Experience with hazardous waste management and familiarity with EPA, RCRA, and applicable state regulations.
  • Ability to apply EHS regulations and best practices in a manufacturing environment, preferably chemical manufacturing.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with plant employees, management, contractors, regulatory agencies, vendors, customers, and visitors.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate records, and complete assignments in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to safely operate powered industrial trucks, including forklifts, or obtain company certification.
  • Flexibility to support operational needs across multiple shifts, including occasional shift transitions for training, safety meetings, and employee engagement activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in chemical manufacturing or a similar industrial environment involving hazardous materials.
  • Experience supporting or overseeing industrial wastewater treatment operations, including neutralization, sampling, permit compliance, and environmental reporting.
  • Ohio EPA Wastewater/Water Reclamation Operator Certification (Class A or higher).

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to safely lift and carry up to 35 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs and access elevated work areas.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in manufacturing and office environments.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and work safely around industrial equipment and chemical manufacturing processes.
  • Willingness to occasionally adjust working hours or provide off-hours or weekend support for training, incident investigations, or emergency response.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
