What are the responsibilities and job description for the System Integration Engineer position at Pentangle Tech Services | P5 Group?
Autonomy Systems Engineer
Location: Tucson, AZ / Peoria, IL
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Autonomy Systems Engineer to support the development, integration, and validation of next-generation autonomous construction equipment, including Excavators, Wheel Loaders, and Articulated Trucks. This role focuses on integrating autonomy hardware and software with machine electrical and electronic systems, performing on-machine commissioning, troubleshooting communication networks, and validating autonomous functionality.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in systems engineering, hardware-software integration, machine electronics, CAN/Ethernet communication, and autonomous system validation, with hands-on experience working on industrial or construction equipment.
Note: This is a hands-on systems integration and validation role, not an embedded software development position.
Hands-On Machine Validation: Experience commissioning, troubleshooting, and validating electronic and autonomy systems in lab and on-machine environments.
Construction Equipment Knowledge: Understanding of construction machinery, machine electrical systems, and CAN/Ethernet communications.
Key Responsibilities
- Integrate and validate autonomous systems on construction equipment, including Excavators, Wheel Loaders, and Articulated Trucks.
- Install, configure, commission, and troubleshoot autonomy hardware, sensors, and electronic systems on machines.
- Flash software onto machine controllers and validate functionality through lab and on-machine testing.
- Support prototype machine builds, system updates, functional testing, and validation activities.
- Monitor and analyze CAN and Ethernet communication to diagnose connectivity, data transmission, and synchronization issues.
- Troubleshoot wiring, harnesses, sensors, GNSS positioning systems, and time synchronization issues.
- Integrate autonomy components, including Cameras, LiDAR, Radar, GNSS, and IMU sensors.
- Collaborate with machine development, autonomy software, electrical, and validation teams to resolve integration issues.
- Translate customer requirements into system-level technical requirements and support system architecture development.
- Lead or support system integration, commissioning, functional validation, and issue resolution.
- Document system architecture, integration procedures, technical findings, and validation results.
- Communicate system readiness, technical risks, and integration progress to engineering stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
- 5–7 years of professional engineering experience in systems engineering, autonomous systems, machine integration, or product development. Internship experience does not count toward the required years.
- Hands-on experience integrating hardware and software systems in autonomous machines or complex electromechanical products.
- Experience with systems integration, functional testing, troubleshooting, and validation in lab and on-machine environments.
- Knowledge of construction equipment, particularly Articulated Trucks, Hydraulic Excavators, and Wheel Loaders.
- Experience with machine electrical systems, wiring, harnesses, sensors, and electronic controllers.
- Working knowledge of CAN, Ethernet, and ROS2 communication and integration.
- Familiarity with autonomous sensing technologies, including LiDAR, Radar, Cameras, GNSS, and IMU.
- Experience translating system requirements into technical specifications and documenting integration and validation activities.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and cross-functional communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing or integrating autonomous construction, mining, agricultural, or off-highway equipment.
- Experience with CAN monitoring and diagnostic tools such as CANalyzer, CANoe, or similar tools.
- Familiarity with Ethernet network diagnostics and troubleshooting tools.
- Knowledge of C and autonomous software architectures.
- Experience with machine commissioning, prototype builds, and field validation.
- Familiarity with sensor calibration, positioning systems, and time synchronization.
- Experience supporting production product development, system rollout, and issue resolution.
Work Environment
- Combination of office, lab, and hands-on machine testing at a proving ground.
- Regular interaction with machine development and autonomy engineering teams.
- Work involves troubleshooting and commissioning equipment directly on or near construction machinery.
- Required personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided.
