What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Assistant/Ophthalmic Assistant, part-time position at Pennsylvania Retina Specialists, PC?
Our Ophthalmic Assistants (Technicians) in York will work on average 24-40 hours per week. A successful candidate will be available to work whatever days we are open in the York office, which flucuates from 3-5 days per week. Initial trianing will occur in the Camp Hill office.
The position of technician will entail using an electronic medical records system with data input as a significant portion of the job, through each of the job duties described. Technicians are expected to routinely rotate through all assigned clinical duties.
Workups
- Technicians call the patient from the main waiting room to a workup lane to prepare them for examination by the doctor. The technician will verbally acquire and input into the EMR, the chief complaint and history of present illness, record the patient‘s ocular and medical history, update med lists and allergies, and complete a review of systems.
- Technicians to acquire based on workup protocols: visual acuity, intraocular pressure with Tonopen or Goldmann Tonometry, Amsler Grid testing, Ishihara color plates, confrontational visual fields, pupil check, administer eye drops, record of blood sugar and A1C values as appropriate, and perform blood pressure check.
Imaging
- Technicians will perform OCT scans on Zeiss, Heidelberg, and other equipment as needed.
- Fundus photography is performed with Optos and other equipment as needed. All clinical staff will be trained to perform venipuncture to perform fluorescein angiography in addition to fundus photos and auto-fluoresce imaging.
Injection Preparation
- Technicians assigned to prep intraocular injections by numbing the eye, drawing up medication, assisting the doctor, rinsing the eye post-injection
- Understanding and knowledge of procedure to inform the patient of each step along the way and what to expect during and post-procedure. The technicians review the side effects and warning signs of infection.
- PODIS Drug Inventory System: all drug is monitored through the software, and technicians work with drug coordinators to reconcile all inventory and drug counts. Technicians assign drugs to patient encounters through the software.
Other duties as assigned
- Technicians may be required to assist with setting up lasers, B-scan, monitoring flow, and filling exam lanes.
- Maintain a daily stock of inventory in each exam lane, work-up room, and notifying inventory management when supplies are needed.
- Open or Close exam lanes based on assigned shift and sign daily sign-off logs.
- “Late shift” employees assist with the flow of the team and deciding when technicians are sent to lunch and any end-of-day responsibilities.
- Opening shift will report before clinic days start, and closing technicians may be required to stay to assist in end-of-day activities if scheduling issues arise.

- Current CPR Certification.
