Overview
Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP is seeking an experienced Senior Lawyer to join its Marine, Trade & Aviation practice in Singapore. This role offers the opportunity to work as part of an internationally recognised team advising a diverse client base across the shipping, commodities and offshore sectors.
The successful candidate will play a key role in advising on high‑value, complex matters with a strong international dimension, while also contributing to client development and team growth.
Responsibilities
Advise clients on a broad range of contentious and non‑contentious marine and trade matters, including:
- Shipping disputes
- Trade and commodities disputes, including trade finance
- Charterparty, bill of lading and cargo claims
- Casualty, collision and salvage matters
- Sanctions, trade compliance and regulatory issues
Manage cases autonomously, with responsibility for strategy, client communication and delivery.
Work collaboratively with colleagues across the firm’s UK and international offices, including cross‑border matters.
Support and mentor junior lawyers within the team.
Contribute to business development, including client relationship management, pitching, thought leadership and industry engagement.
Play an active role in developing the firm’s profile in the Singapore and wider market.
Essential & Desirable Criteria
- Qualified lawyer (Singapore-qualified, England & Wales, or equivalent common law jurisdiction).
- Significant post‑qualification experience in marine and trade law.
- Strong experience handling complex disputes and/or contentious advisory work in these sectors.
- Proven ability to manage files independently and advise sophisticated clients.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Commercially minded, proactive and client‑focused approach.
Desirable Attributes
- Experience gained at a well‑regarded international or regional law firm.
- Existing client relationships or demonstrable business development capability.
- Familiarity with litigation and international arbitration.
- Interest in contributing to the strategic growth of the practice in Asia.
