As a part of a larger medical team, the Registered Nurse (RN) evaluates inmates/clients/detainees and provides comprehensive medical care, while observing and maintaining the requirements of security within the Pennington County Jail, Care Campus and Western South Dakota Juvenile Services Center. Medical team members provide inmate/client/detainee services in an orderly, respectful and disciplined manner, consistent with the professionalism expected of all Sheriff’s Office employees.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assess and identify health problems of new inmates/clients/detainees, initiate medical records, document findings and establish patient care plans.
- Respond to emergency situations and take charge until off-site emergency personnel arrive.
- Prioritize inmate/client/detainee medical needs and assign staff as needed.
- Administer prescribed treatment and medication to inmates/clients/detainees at any PCSO facility as needed and medically required, within licensing authorization.
- Participate in decision-making regarding client/inmate/detainee medical care, including the need for transfer to outside medical care; confer with medical providers as needed.
- Meet with the Charge Nurse to review medical services administered to inmates/clients/detainees.
- Serve as a Charge Nurse in their absence as assigned.
- Provide medical update to incoming medical staff prior to shift change.
- Participate in staff meetings and in-service trainings and maintain RN license and other certifications as required.
- Perform related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Maintain compliance with all county policies and procedures.
Education and/or Experience Required:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Current South Dakota Registered Nurse License or ability to readily obtain a South Dakota state certification as a Registered Nurse.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid South Dakota Driver’s License within 90 days of moving to South Dakota.
