Summary:

  • The Vice President of Data serves as Penn Medicine's enterprise data leader, responsible for setting the vision, strategy, and standards for how data is used to drive clinical excellence, operational performance, research, and informed decision-making across the health system. As Penn Medicine continues its transition from decentralized analytics to a centralized enterprise model, the VP will accelerate the evolution toward a uniform, trusted set of metrics and data products, scalable analytics solutions, and a modern cloud-based data platform. This role leads the data platform, data management, and reporting and business intelligence functions.

Responsibilities:

Enterprise Data Strategy: Define and execute a comprehensive enterprise data strategy that supports clinical, operational, and research priorities and aligns with Penn Medicine’s strategic goals. Establish and enforce enterprise-wide standards for data sources, metric definitions, data models, and reporting. Leverage deep expertise in EMRs and core healthcare data systems to drive integration and usability across the organization.

Leadership & Organizational Transformation: Articulate a clear vision for how data enables performance, quality, and efficiency, and lead the organizational change required to achieve that vision. Promote best practices in data, analytics, and decision-making, raising data literacy and embedding data into clinical and operational workflows. Make prioritization and tradeoff decisions that maximize enterprise value and enable scale.

Team Leadership & Development: Lead and develop a centralized, high-performing data organization spanning clinical, operational, and research data domains. Foster a positive, inclusive, and innovative culture that attracts, develops, and retains top data and analytics talent. Establish clear service models, roles, and expectations to improve delivery effectiveness and stakeholder satisfaction.

Stakeholder Partnership: Partner closely with clinical, operational, and technical leaders to understand needs, prioritize initiatives, and deliver high-impact solutions. Balance responsiveness to stakeholder needs with the discipline required to drive standardization and scale. Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on data, analytics, and emerging technologies.

Industry & Domain Expertise: Stay current on healthcare data trends, analytics and AI advancements, and regulatory requirements. Incorporate relevant innovations into Penn Medicine’s data strategy in a responsible, governed manner.

Outcome Accountability: The Vice President of Data is accountable for delivering measurable outcomes, including:

  • Enterprise source of truth: Consistent, trusted data sources, metrics, and reports used across the organization.
  • Scalable analytics and reporting: Consolidation of dashboards and reports into cohesive, persona-driven solutions that support clinical and business workflows.
  • Self-service enablement: Delivery and broad adoption of self-service data and analytics tools.
  • Modern data platform: Continued implementation and optimization of a secure, cost-effective, cloud-based data platform.
  • AI-enabled productivity: Use of automation, copilots, and generative AI to increase data team efficiency and enhance the usability and value of self-service analytics. Develop data products to enable AI applications and self-service.
  • Operational efficiency: Cost-effective data practices that reduce complexity and operating expenses.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Deep knowledge of EMR systems, particularly Epic, and their use in clinical and operational analytics.
  • Proven experience modernizing data platforms and standardizing analytics, metrics, and reporting in large, matrixed organizations.
  • Demonstrated success building and leading high-performing technical teams through periods of transformation.
  • Strong strategic and business acumen, with the ability to translate organizational goals into scalable data and analytics products.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively at all levels.
  • Experience with cloud-native data platforms, data governance, security, and privacy frameworks.
  • Passion for leveraging data and analytics to improve patient care, operational efficiency, and financial performance.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required.
  • An advanced degree is required.
  • 10 years of progressive leadership experience in data, analytics, or data platform roles within complex healthcare environments.
