Summary:

  • The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is a newly licensed new-to-practice RN or RN with less than 15 months of experience thatdemonstrates basic safe practice within the organizational professional practice model.The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice seeks guidance to integrate concepts, knowledge, skills and attitudes to meet standards forcompetent professional nursing practice as specified in the Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice position description.The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice exhibits PMPH organizational behavioral competencies which reflect its mission and areembedded in the professional practice competency domains.The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is accountable for the provision of direct care to patients who may range in age from infancy tothe elderly and demonstrates within the competency domains of Continuous Quality Improvement, Evidence Based Practice and Research,Leadership, Person and Family Centered Care, Professionalism, Safety, Teamwork, and Technology/ Informatics (Definitions listed below).The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice works closely with the interprofessional health care team to facilitate the coordination of careacross the continuum. The nurse focuses on developing the knowledge and skills necessary to provide individualized care based on physical,psychosocial, cultural, educational, safety, and age-appropriate considerations of assigned patients.The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice requires consultation with more experienced clinicians and benefits from feedback whiledemonstrating growth in the ability to care for increasingly complex patients. The nurse demonstrates how nursing practice impacts theorganizational vision, mission, and goals and the care delivery system. The nurse complies with all regulations and standards of regulatory andaccrediting bodies.The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice /Apprentice must complete all Clinical Nurse 1 competencies and is expected to advance to the ClinicalNurse 2 Colleague level by 18 months of professional practice.

Responsibilities:

  • Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI): The nurse utilizes data and QI methods to identify potential and actual problems andopportunities to provide care that is safe, timely, efficient, effective, and equitable.
  • Recognizes how data is uses in QI efforts
  • Describes the use of QI process
  • States an understanding of how unit quality affects system effectiveness
  • Participates as a team member on a performance improvement project
  • Evidence Based Practice and Research: The nurse evaluates and integrates best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient andfamily preferences and values for the delivery of optimal health care and system effectiveness.
  • Elicits and respects patient and family values when considering EBP decisions
  • Participates in data collection for research and/or EBP improvements
  • Consults with experts when the basis for practice is questioned
  • Leadership: The nurse effectively collaborates and applies innovative, systems thinking to engage in systematic, evidence- based problemsolving and decision making to promote effective changes within a complex care delivery system supporting the vision of Penn Medicine
  • Supervises patient care provided by others for which the nurse is responsible by using best practice management, leadership andevaluation and delegates and collaborates effectively to meet patient care needs.
  • Demonstrated engagement in unit and system initiative as well as the ability to learn on the fly
  • Communicates thoughts, feeling, and ideas to justify a position and employs appropriate social skills
  • Develops conflict resolution skills for self and team members, listens objectively to all sides of an issue before making judgement, andinitiate action to resolve conflict.
  • Person and Family Centered Care: The nurse recognizes the patient (or the patient’s designee) as the source of control and a full partner inproviding compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for the patient’s preferences, values, and needs
  • Develops and understands effective communication with patients and families regarding the clinical plan of care, engages them as activepartners in care, fosters a healing environment keeping the patient and family at the center of all decision while assessing the patient’sand family’s ability and readiness to learn adapting the teaching plan accordingly
  • Completes comprehensive systematic assessment relevant to the practice setting integrating clinical reasoning and knowledge as thefoundation for decision-making and empowers the patient and family to take an active role in the care development process
  • Identifies cultural needs and perspectives in the relief of pain, discomfort and suffering through incorporating and supporting culturalcompetence, diversity and inclusion into practice while understanding that each patient is unique
  • Utilizes ethical, legal, and regulatory principles in the provision of care balancing patient’s rights and organization’s responsibilities inproviding professional and ethical care
  • Assumes responsibility and authority for establishing a therapeutic relationship with the patient and creating an individualized plan ofcare while assuming accountability for all nursing outcomes. Promotes family presence and participation in care in accordance with thepatient preferences.
  • Professionalism: The nurse demonstrates a commitment to the nursing profession through lifelong learning, adherence to ANA’s Code ofEthics for Nurses, participation in a professional organization and advancing community outreach
  • Actively contributes to a healthy work environment and seeks to develop effective communication skills that contribute to a healthy workenvironment
  • Participate in shared decision-making and shared governance activities that promote the development and practice of nursing, valuingthe recommendations of professional nursing organizations and others and supports decisions once they have been made and agreedupon adjusting practice accordingly
  • Adheres to the ANA’s Code of Ethics for Nurses and professional nursing/organizational standards. Articulates the application of andintegrates high ethical standards and core values into everyday work activities displaying sound moral and ethical character andjudgement while promoting accountability.
  • Demonstrates willingness to learn and actively engage in personal and professional growth establishing and following through withpersonal goals that support unit, organizational and Penn Medicine goals and imperatives
  • Participates in formal and informal peer review and actively seeks and accepts constructive feedback through supervisor and peer review
  • Demonstrates responsibility for continued competency in nursing practice and develops insight through reflection, self-analysis, self-care, and life-long learning
  • Safety: The nurse minimizes risk of harm to patients, families, providers and self through system effectiveness and individual performance.
  • Recognizes and responds to unsafe situations using available resources to prevent injury. Articulate the appropriate documentation ofunsafe events and propose solutions to correct future occurrences
  • Communicated concerns related to safety risks to patient, families and the healthcare team, responds to patient and family safetyconcerns, engages patient and family in partnership to promote safety and promotes active patient and family engagement in care
  • Integrates safety principles, National Patient Safety Goals, the NJ State Board of Nursing and the American Nurses Association Scope ofStandards of Practice and the standards for safe medication administration into own practice
  • Recognizes the benefits and limitations of safety enhancing technology, utilizes pharmco-therapeutics to ensure best possible outcomesfor patients and when near miss or errors occur, utilizes the organizational error reporting system for reporting.
  • Recognizes own limitations and seeks assistance when needed and delegates work appropriately providing direction and guidance toclinical support personnel
  • Teamwork: The nurse effectively engages in the process of cooperation, coordination, and collaboration in an effort to provide for safe, qualityoutcomes for patients within inter and intra-professional teams, including virtual teams
  • Participated as an effective team member by fostering open communication and shared decision making while using respectful languageappropriate for a given difficult situation, crucial conversations, or inter- professional conflict
  • Embraces the cultural diversity and individuality of health care team members and recognizes the impact of his/her behaviors on others
  • Acknowledges own contributions to effective and ineffective team functioning and solicits input from other team members to improveindividual and team performance
  • Demonstrated active engagement in enhancing patient care and promoting a positive workplace environment
  • Technology/Informatics: The nurse utilizes appropriate information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, andsupport decision making across the continuum.
  • Demonstrates the ability to use clinical systems and technology to accomplish a specific task and protects patient confidentiality
  • Documents and plans patient care in the EMR and consistently provides accurate, timely and complete documentation in the EMU whileutilizing the EMR to communicate with the care team and evaluate patient needs
  • Identifies and responds appropriately to clinical decision support notifications and alerts
  • Participates in risk evaluation and states an understanding of the legal implication of late or inaccurate EMR documentation

Credentials:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
  • Registered Nurse - NJ (Required)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required)
  • Education Specialization: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing or in pursuit of a BSN Equivalent Experience:
  • And Less than 15 months professional nursing experience

Salary Range:

$43.71 - $43.71/Hourly
