The Peninsula Health Care District Health & Fitness Center is seeking an engaging, knowledgeable, and dependable Pilates, Yoga & Barre Instructor to lead safe and effective group fitness classes for our members.
Our Fitness Center primarily serves older adults, so the ideal instructor will be comfortable working with a wide range of fitness levels and abilities and will understand how to modify exercises for participants with mobility limitations, joint conditions, balance concerns, and other age-related considerations.
Instructors may teach one or more formats, including Pilates, Chair Pilates, Yoga, Chair Yoga, and Barre, depending on experience and certifications.
- Plan and lead safe, organized, and engaging Pilates, Yoga, Barre, and/or chair-based group fitness classes.
- Provide appropriate exercise modifications and progressions for older adults and participants with varying fitness levels and physical limitations.
- Demonstrate proper technique, alignment, posture, breathing, and body mechanics throughout each class.
- Create a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages participation while allowing members to work within their individual abilities.
- Monitor participants during class and provide clear verbal and visual instruction to promote safe movement.
- Adapt exercises for members with common orthopedic concerns, including knee, hip, shoulder, and back limitations.
- Incorporate exercises that support strength, flexibility, mobility, balance, posture, and functional movement.
- Prepare the studio and any necessary equipment before class and return equipment to its proper location afterward.
- Begin and end classes on time and communicate schedule changes or anticipated absences in advance.
- Follow Fitness Center safety procedures, emergency protocols, and organizational policies.
- Build positive relationships with members and contribute to the welcoming, community-focused environment of the Fitness Center.
- Collaborate with Fitness Center staff regarding participant needs, class programming, and opportunities to improve or expand group fitness offerings.
- Current nationally recognized group fitness, Pilates, Yoga, Barre, or related instructor certification appropriate for the format being taught.
- Current CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain certification prior to teaching.
- Experience teaching group fitness classes preferred.
- Experience working with older adults, beginners, or individuals with physical limitations strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of exercise modifications, regressions, and progressions.
- Knowledge of safe movement, proper alignment, and basic anatomy and exercise principles.
- Ability to provide clear, encouraging, and professional instruction.
- Dependable, punctual, organized, and comfortable working independently.
- Ability to create a positive class environment for participants with a broad range of abilities.
Certification or experience in more than one of the following formats:
- Pilates
- Chair Pilates
- Yoga
- Chair Yoga
- Barre
- Experience teaching active-aging or senior fitness programs.
- Training related to balance, fall prevention, corrective exercise, functional fitness, or special populations.
- Experience modifying traditional Pilates, Yoga, or Barre exercises for individuals who may have difficulty getting on and off the floor.
The instructor must be able to:
- Demonstrate exercises and movement patterns during class.
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, reach, squat, and move between standing and floor-level positions as appropriate for the class format.
- Assist with setting up and storing light fitness equipment.
- Provide verbal instruction while demonstrating exercises.
- Safely respond to participant needs and emergencies during class.
