Position Overview:
As part of the State Targeted Response (STR) to the Opioid Crisis, this position provides outreach and engagement services to individuals experiencing homelessness and living with, or at risk of, opioid use disorder. Using personal experience in recovery, the Peer Support Specialist helps participants access treatment, housing, and community resources to support long-term recovery and stability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct outreach in the community, homeless encampments, and emergency departments to engage individuals in need of services.
- Build trusting relationships and connect clients to housing, benefits, and treatment services.
- Support clients in enrolling and participating in Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) or other substance use disorder treatment programs.
- Collaborate with treatment providers, healthcare professionals, and recovery support networks.
- Use lived experience and recovery principles to mentor and guide participants.
- Maintain accurate documentation and uphold confidentiality under applicable laws (42 CFR Part 2, RCW 71.05/71.24).
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Personal lived experience in recovery from substance use disorder or mental health condition (minimum two years)
- Agency Affiliated Counselor Registration (assistance provided)
- Certified Peer Support Specialist credential within 6 months of hire (assistance provided).
- Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record
- Must pass a background check, drug test, and provide vaccination records (MMR, Hep B, Tdap, flu).
Preferred:
- Familiarity with peer support principles: recovery-oriented, strengths-based, and person-centered.
- Experience in outreach, engagement, or working with homeless populations.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong communication, empathy, and advocacy skills.
- Ability to manage crises, maintain boundaries, and promote self-advocacy.
- Knowledge of community and recovery resources.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Work Environment:
- Community and office-based work, including outreach in various weather conditions.
- Moderate physical activity (lifting up to 25 lbs).
- Some evenings and weekends required.
