TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 Month
SUMMARY: The School Social Worker provides supportive services to students and their families in overcoming barriers to learning; to promote positive working relationships among and between staff and the schools by fostering a climate conducive to open communication and productive work.
SUPERVISED BY: Director, Educational Services
REQUIRED QUALIFICATION(S):
- Masters Degree in social work related field
- State certified/licensed
- Experience working with children
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION(S):
- Bilingual preferred

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Counsels students and parents individually and in groups on topics such as problem solving skills, parenting skills, abuse of drugs and alcohol, family violence, and other such topics.
2. Communicates with teachers and other staff about students’ life situations and home/neighborhood circumstances.
3. Acts as a liaison for families to interpret their concerns to school personnel and maintains open lines of communication.
4. Provides information to facilitate the family’s use of community resources for meeting housing, clothing, nutritional, and health needs.
5. Provides short-term crisis intervention to students, staff, and families.
6. Serves as a liaison to community agencies.
7. Assists with the coordination of activities and programs for homeless children.
8. Assists families in understanding their children’s educational needs and the resources available within the school.
9. Interviews parents and others to obtain social history, developmental history, and other background information concerning the needs of students.
10. Helps students overcome barriers to school attendance and achievement, and promotes responsible behavior.
11. Participates in staff conferences related to the student’s behavior adjustment and academic progress.
12. Assists students and their families to explore alternative educational programs and career options.
13. Fosters collaborative educational efforts among staff by supporting the district’s vision, mission and goals and its commitment to shared decision making.
14. Perform such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent/Designee.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions; ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several concrete variables
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret education materials and programs; ability to write reports, procedure manuals, and correspondence; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, students, administration, and the community.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical such as probability and statistical inference; ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
