Performs intermediate administrative work planning and directing of recreation activities for the County, and related work as apparent of assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Parks and Recreation Director.Illustrative Examples of Work
- Plans, organizes, and performs any tasks associated with County sponsored special events and programs, including but not limited to promoting, setting up, breaking down, and cleaning facilities.
- Develops, coordinates, schedules, implements, and evaluates a variety of recreational programs, activities, special events, and facilities including adult athletics, summer camps, educational programs, and special events.
- Promotes, and supervises staff, volunteers, and instructors for recreational programs.
- Evaluates effectiveness of special events and recreational programs and recruits additional instructors when appropriate.
- Processes, communicates, and coordinates the “Special Event Application” process for the County.
- Prepares and administers contracts for vendor operations and contracted instructors.
- Schedules and evaluates part-time and seasonal staff.
- Maintains program records; prepares necessary reports.
- Coordinates and verifies activity schedules for special events and programs.
- Procures services and/or donations for camps, wellness, and programs by contacting local businesses, meeting with professionals, and developing partnerships with local organizations.
- Prepares brochures, fliers, and news releases, to submit to parks and recreation director for approval and performs administrative tasks.
- Seeks grants and works with Director in preparing and applying for funding.
- Responds to emergencies and administers first aid as appropriate.
- Works a self-directed schedule that may include nights and weekends, according to program needs, with little or no supervision.
- Assists with coordinating logistics for field and facility rentals, including but not limited to, providing tours and information to prospective renters and, implementing details outlined in rental agreements. Acts as liaison to patrons, vendors, and participants to ensure events are properly executed with optimal satisfaction.
- Responds to public inquiries concerning programs.
- Ensures the safety of individuals and security of facilities; evaluates and takes appropriate action to correct unusual situations including fights, thefts, vandalism, behavior problems, code violations, etc.
- Enforces rules and regulations, facility rules, etc. for use of the facility.
- Monitors buildings, grounds, and equipment; reports needed repairs.
- Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge of the standards, principles, practices, rules, and procedures of organized youth programs; the philosophy and objectives of public recreation; standard safety practices; various recreation facilities, materials and equipment, their uses and maintenance requirements; the principles of supervision, organization, and administration; and the current literature, trends. and development in the field of recreation programs.
Skilled in planning, organizing, promoting, leading, supervising and monitoring the activities of others in relation to recreation programs; using time effectively and efficiently; exercising good judgment in the application of programs, rules and procedures; planning, assigning and supervising the work of subordinates, and instructing them in proper work methods and procedures; gathering and analyzing information from a variety of sources, and preparing clear and concise reports from information; understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; composing effective correspondence; establishing rapport, understanding, and confidence with participants and the general public; being flexible with unexpected situations that accompany working with the public; giving oral presentations before large groups of people; exercising tact and courtesy in frequent contact with business persons, public officials and the general public; using common office machines, a computer and related software applications; and communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Knowledge of the standards, principles, practices, rules and procedures of organized fitness/wellness programs; the philosophy and objectives of public recreation; health and wellness programming; industry researched best practices; standard safety practices; various recreation facilities, materials and equipment and their uses; nutrition, physical fitness, addiction prevention, stress and weight management; disease and injury risk prevention; behavior change; project management, organization and administration; grant processes; and the current trends and development in the field of fitness/wellness programs. Knowledge of basic safety rules and regulations regarding use of the facility and equipment.
Minimum Education and Experiences
Bachelor’s Degree in Parks & Recreation, Early Childhood Educations, or related field, and three (3) years of experience working with youth and recreation program planning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above is required.
Special Requirement
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
- First Aid and CPR certification desired
- Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) preferred
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift objects. Must possess the visual acuity to operate light equipment such as the waxers and vacuum cleaners and to review work for cleanliness and thoroughness.
Working Conditions
Employee in this class is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat, noise from motorized maintenance equipment, vibrations, atmospheric conditions, and oils, greases, fumes, dirt, sharps from metal and glass. Employee must wear hearing/visual protection while performing most field work and may be exposed to blood borne pathogens requiring specialized personal protective equipment.
Salary : $59,134 - $73,917
