About the Role
The City University of New York (CUNY) seeks an experienced Paralegal to provide essential and confidential support to the University FOIL and Records Access Officer (UFRAO). This position involves handling complex, time-sensitive matters related to the New York State Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and records retention and disposition for CUNY Central Office. The ideal candidate will possess strong legal research skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage administrative tasks in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Review FOIL requests for access to CUNY Central Office public records and determine the existence of requested records.
- Review records for responsiveness and propose redactions of confidential information.
- Draft responses to FOIL requests and perform legal research as needed.
- Monitor and update GovQA system.
- Collaborate with University staff on FOIL requests and records retention matters.
- Liaise with the Office of Strategy and Policy Implementation, Office of the General Counsel, and college Legal Affairs designees.
- Perform administrative duties, including scheduling meetings and conferences.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree and four years of paralegal or legal assistant experience.
- Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to organize and analyze large volumes of information and documents.
- Proficiency in administrative tasks such as scheduling meetings, managing calendars, and responding to calls/emails.
- Detail-oriented, accurate, and solution-focused.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities under deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
- Computer proficiency in online legal research tools, Microsoft Office, OneDrive, and virtual collaboration platforms (Teams, Zoom).
Preferred Qualifications
- Four years of paralegal or legal assistant experience supporting FOIL or document review in a college, law firm, government agency, or nonprofit organization.
- Paralegal Certification.
- Proactive, flexible, and collaborative work style with strong interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational and project management skills to coordinate complex legal processes.
