Pay Rate: $65,000 Annually
Summary
The Surgery Manager is responsible for managing the surgery department including scheduling, hiring, training, and performance management of surgery veterinary technicians; maintaining administrative duties of the department; ensuring surgical flow for pets within the shelter; ensuring surgical capacity is maximized for surgery team; and ensuring efficiency and flow of daily operation in the surgery department. This position is responsible for achieving League goals and meeting financial responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Medical Care & Surgery Flow Management:
- Maintain expectations regarding daily surgical flow:
- Monitor lists for pets needing spay/neuter, other surgeries, and dentals to ensure timely surgery turnaround times.
- Determine which days to schedule specific types of surgeries while ensuring shelter, foster, and public surgeries are completed in a timely manner.??
- Notify director of any concerns moving an animal through surgery.
- Proactively anticipate daily operations of surgical team; problem solving when unexpected issues arise.
- Update and ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures and protocols in conjunction with the Director of Veterinary Medicine.
- Monitor shelter surgery lists, TNVR sign up, public surgery sign up, and veterinarian schedule. Anticipate how many surgeries can be completed each day and communicate with Pet Resources Coordinators and/or TNVR team in a timely manner if more surgeries should be scheduled.
- Work closely with all veterinarians.
- Perform induction, prepare patient for procedure, monitor pets under anesthesia, recover pets from anesthesia. Perform triage, phlebotomy, lab work, IV catheter placement, wound management/bandaging, fluid maintenance, injectable and oral medication administration. Perform dental radiographs and dental scaling.
- Prepare laboratory testing: CBC, chemistry panels, T4, urinalysis/fecal analysis, ear cytology, blood smears, facilitate outside lab work, etc.
- Demonstrate a high level of customer service with clients.
- Oversee surgical equipment, and timely report needs to the Director of Veterinary Medicine.
- Ensure drug log accuracy.
- Perform humane euthanasia when necessary.
- Maintain appropriate standard of care protocols regarding patient housing.
Staff & Volunteer Management:
- Train, supervise, and manage performance of surgery veterinary technicians and shelter veterinary technicians rotating through surgery.
- Responsible for recruiting, interviewing, and hiring candidates for employment.
- Responsible for placement, training, oversight, and performance management of volunteers in the absence of a volunteer lead. Support volunteer lead and completing this tasks.
- Communicate professionally and effectively with surgical team, Medical Services staff, management, and all PAARL departments.
- Maintain the monthly schedule for surgery technicians.
- Create and maintain a workplace conducive to high employee morale and output, ensuring positive working relationships between clients, doctors, staff in medical department and in other departments, and volunteers.

Qualifications

- Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or combined education and/or experience working as a veterinary technician.
- Experience managing staff preferred.
- Experience working in an animal shelter environment preferred.
- Ability to lead and direct veterinary technicians.
- Ability to work independently and effectively with managers, directors, staff, and volunteers to accomplish daily tasks as well as strategic plans and contribute effectively as part of a team.
- Compassion for animals, concern for their welfare, and an ability to handle the physical and emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including euthanasia.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office required.
- Willing to stay at the shelter during a hurricane or other disaster.
- Willing to work weekends if necessary.
- Willing to attend organizational events.
- Bilingual preferred.
