Essential Responsibilities

The LCAS-A will:

  • Provide in-person substance use disorder counseling within the scope of the LCAS-A credential.
  • Facilitate structured individual and group substance use treatment sessions.
  • Provide services associated with outpatient substance use programming, including SAIOP and/or SACOT when assigned and when credentialing and service requirements are met.
  • Participate in comprehensive clinical and substance use assessments as permitted by credential, supervision, payer, and service requirements.
  • Utilize ASAM criteria and other appropriate clinical information to support treatment and level-of-care decisions.
  • Participate in development and implementation of individualized treatment plans and measurable treatment goals.
  • Utilize evidence-based and evidence-informed interventions appropriate for substance use disorders.
  • Utilize Motivational Interviewing, relapse-prevention strategies, stages-of-change interventions, psychoeducation, and recovery-oriented approaches.
  • Address triggers, cravings, high-risk situations, coping skills, relapse patterns, and barriers to sustained recovery.
  • Provide education regarding substance use disorders, recovery, overdose prevention, harm reduction, and available community resources as appropriate.
  • Recognize co-occurring mental health symptoms and coordinate with appropriate behavioral health professionals.
  • Monitor client engagement, treatment progress, barriers, and continued service needs.
  • Participate in treatment-team meetings, case consultation, and care coordination.
  • Make appropriate recommendations for higher or lower levels of care when clinically indicated and within scope.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and client confidentiality.
  • Complete progress notes, treatment-plan documentation, assessments, discharge documentation, and other assigned clinical records accurately and within required timeframes.
