As a Generator Technician, you'll be responsible for servicing and repairing commercial generators at telecom sites in your region. Core Responsibilities:
- Perform automatic and manual transfer switch (ATS) operations, ensuring smooth transition from main power to backup generators. Diagnose and troubleshoot ATS failures and bypass operations as needed.
- Install, maintain, and repair high-voltage switchgear and control panels, ensuring proper power distribution to connected loads.
- Understand and work with single and multiple generator systems, including generator paralleling for load balancing and redundancy.
- Conduct load bank testing to verify generator performance, measuring voltage, current, and phase output to ensure proper load distribution.
- Read and interpret generator alarm codes (number and light-based), diagnose faults such as overheating, low oil pressure, and electrical malfunctions, and perform necessary repairs.
- Perform component-level repairs such as bearing replacements, armature repairs, input/output fixes, and full generator unit overhauls, ensuring reliable performance.
- Execute routine oil changes, lubrication, fuel system maintenance, and dust/debris cleaning to extend generator lifespan and reduce unexpected failures.
- Diagnose voltage irregularities, current inconsistencies, overheating, and motor speed issues, ensuring generators operate at peak efficiency.
- Have a chance to work on a variety of generator brands, including John Deere, CAT, Generac, Kohler, and Cummins, or similar commercial-grade systems.
- Handle generators across various power output levels, from kilowatts (kW) to megawatts (MW), depending on client and site needs.
- Be prepared for 24/7 emergency callouts, responding to power outages, alarms, and critical generator failures in a timely manner.
Core Experience
- Minimum 1 year of hands-on experience with generator diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs
- 2 years of preventative generator maintenance experience required
- Experience in operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining ATS and switchgear systems to ensure seamless power transitions.
- Proven experience performing load bank testing, analyze voltage/current readings, and verify generator performance under various loads.
- Familiarity with single and multiple generator paralleling, including load balancing and system synchronization.
- Strong knowledge of electrical and mechanical components, including diagnosing voltage fluctuations, motor performance issues, and overheating.
- Demonstrated experience in reading and troubleshooting generator alarm codes, including number-based and light-indicator alerts, and perform necessary corrective actions.
- Hands on Experience with bearing replacements, armature repairs, input/output fixes, and full generator overhauls.
- Able to conduct all oil changes, lubrication, fuel system maintenance, and general upkeep to ensure long-term generator reliability.
- Hands on experience with one or more generator brands including John Deere, CAT, Generac, Kohler, Cummins, or similar commercial generator brands.
- Experience working with generators across various power output levels (kW to MW).
- Familiarity with FCC, FAA, EPA, OSHA regulations, and relevant industry standards. EGSA certification is a plus.
Physical/Work Environment:

- This position requires lifting over 50 pounds, stooping, bending, kneeling, squatting, climbing, and standing for long periods of time
- Must have the ability to inspect and/or troubleshoot equipment/alarms effectively, both visually and audibly
- Must be willing and able to drive long distances, workday, evening, or night hours; overtime, emergency callouts, weekends, and holidays as required; must assume 24-hour on-call duty when assigned and be gone from home for extended periods of time
- Must be able to meet the requirements of a DOT driver including physical, background and driving record.
