Job description:

Peak Exotic Animal Veterinary Specialists is looking for part-time/as-needed Registered Veterinary Technicians to join our list of relief technicians at our hospital in beautiful Littleton, Colorado. This new, state-of-the-art hospital is privately co-owned by two Board-certified Zoological Companion Animal veterinarians. The vision of the hospital is to provide gold-standard medical care to our extraordinary patients and clients, and to continue to be leaders at the cutting edge of exotic animal medicine. We aim to have an inclusive and collaborative environment where our team members and relief staff can grow and develop their skills and knowledge base. We also collaborate with external veterinary colleagues often through referrals, consultations, and wet labs. Key Responsibilities:

  • Animal Care & Handling:
  • Safely restrain and handle a variety of exotic species.
  • Assist in physical examinations, treatments, and surgical procedures.
  • Monitor patient vital signs before, during, and after procedures.
  • Medical & Laboratory Support:
  • Collect and process blood, urine, fecal, and other diagnostic samples.
  • Operate diagnostic equipment (e.g., radiology, endoscopy, lab analyzers).
  • Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed.
  • Surgical & Anesthesia Assistance:
  • Prepare animals and surgical suites for procedures.
  • Monitor anesthesia and assist in surgical recovery.
  • Maintain sterile technique and surgical instruments.
  • Client Communication & Education:
  • Provide discharge instructions and at-home care guidance.
  • Educate owners on nutrition, enrichment, and preventive care specific to exotic species.
  • Keeping up with client communications (emails, callbacks, scheduling appointments/rechecks, etc.)
  • Review estimates and invoices with clients
  • Facility & Equipment Maintenance:
  • Clean and sanitize cages, exam rooms, and equipment.
  • Ensure proper inventory of medications and supplies.
  • Follow protocols for biosecurity and zoonotic disease prevention.

Qualifications:

  • Required:
  • Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent.
  • Certification or license as a Veterinary Technician (CVT, LVT, RVT) in Colorado
  • Minimum 1 year of clinical experience, preferably with exotics or wildlife.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States by the date of hire. We cannot sponsor work visas at this time.
  • Preferred:
  • Specialized training or certification in exotic animal medicine.
  • Experience in a zoo, wildlife rehabilitation center, or exotic animal practice.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of exotic animal physiology and husbandry.
  • Proficient in handling and restraint techniques for non-domestic species.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm in high-pressure or emergency situations.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Capable of lifting and restraining animals up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work independently without direct guidance.
  • Must practice compassion, empathy, and gold-standard nursing care for all patients and owners.
  • Understand and follow the practice’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Standards of Care (SOC).

Physical Job Requirements:

  • Standing or walking up to 80% per shift.
  • Frequently lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Stand, push, pull, carry, squat, and kneel.
  • Fast-paced, often unpredictable clinical setting.
  • Exposure to animals that may scratch, bite, or carry zoonotic diseases.
  • Work may involve evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts.
  • Relief employees are expected to maintain a clean, professional appearance at all times while on duty

Schedule:

  • Relief shifts will be scheduled on an as-needed basis based on the clinic’s needs.
  • Day shifts are typically 8AM – 6PM (Sunday – Friday)
  • Night shifts are typically 7PM – 7:15AM (Sunday – Thursday)

Salary:

  • $23.00 - $28.00 per hour DOE
