Criminal Justice Protective Services Teacher: Career Technical Education (CTE) 2026-2027 School Year

 

DEFINITION

 

High school criminal justice teachers are responsible for instructing students in how the criminal justice system works, and they also monitor student progress. Teaching criminal justice includes discussing the function, organization and history of the agencies and laws that comprise the criminal justice system. Often, the study of criminal justice encompasses the subjects of law enforcement and criminal court and corrections systems.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Provide instruction in the content by the Massachusetts Vocational-Technical Frameworks for Criminal Justice
  2. Curriculum Map and scaffold Massachusetts Framework in Criminal Justice to support the learning continuum and maximize student growth and understanding in the career area.
  3. Enforce and Educate all OSHA safety regulations within the career education setting.
  4. Instruct and Manage students in the field when participating in an externship and or cooperative education placement.
  5. Document student performance, behavior, and achievement within the career education setting.
  6. Maintain parental or guardian communication, and update the grading portal at a biweekly minimum. 
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of students’ IEPs and 504s along with the accommodations and modifications necessary for student success; modify assignments, tests, and quizzes in collaboration with special educators, if required.
  8. Develop resources for students to be successful, such as models, graphic organizers, and copies of class notes, video clips, demonstrations, etc.
  9. Participate as a member of the CTE Department; collaborate with teachers within the department and across academic disciplinary
  10. Collaborate with Community Partners to place students in their career areas.
  11. Maintain documentation, for student performance, CTE hours, student absences/tardies, 
  12. Ability to integrate technology into the curriculum and classroom.
  13. Corresponds, both oral and written with parent/guardian.and administrators related to student needs
  14. Attend Advisory Board meetings twice per year; attend Open House, Attend parent-teacher conferences twice a year, and all after-school faculty/department meetings.
  15. Communicate with Advisory Boards members to maintain realistic work expectations
  16. Keep current within the Medical Profession to educate students on relevant and authentic skills, and topics. 
  17. Prepares the student to receive their 911 Dispatchers certification, OSHA, CPR, and First Aid 
  18. Have Recent experience in the field of Criminal Justice (Security, Law enforcement, Lawyer, Courts and or Probation) 
  19. Responsible for providing training and education on all types of protective service agencies, professional behavior, Interpersonal and computer-mediated communication, collecting information and recording documentation schedule, defining the proper use of force, outlining the mediation process, explaining the trial court and criminal court system, the occupation roles within the court, court proceedings, trial proceedings, describe the role of the judge and jury. Understand constitutional law, all the amendments, and trial procedures. Ability to analyze elements of civil infractions demonstrates knowledge of police investigations and the process used for investigation. Identify issues with law, ethics, diversity, culture and beliefs, and resolution tactics.
  20. Ability to explain fundamentals of constitutional law
  21. Experience working with high school students.
  22. Performs such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as the principal may from time to time assign.

 

Qualifications:

  1. Massachusetts Chapter 74 Licensure in Criminal Justice or be eligible to attain a preliminary vocational-technical DESE teacher license.
  2. Associate degree or higher degree related to the subject matter and skills to be taught.
  3. Four years of full-time employment experience (within the last seven years) directly related to the criminal justice field
  4. Passing Score on the written criminal justice test and criminal justice performance exam.
  5. High School Diploma.
  6. SEI Endorsement OR ability to achieve SEI endorsement within three years of hire.
