POSITION:                  Athletic Trainer

REPORTS TO:             Director of Physical Education, Comprehensive Health, and Athletics

Salary:                        Annual contract

POSITION DESCRIPTION:  Manage comprehensive sports medicine programs for student-athletes. Responsibilities include injury prevention, emergency medical response, concussion management, and rehabilitation. The role requires Massachusetts state licensure, Board of Certification (BOC) credentials, and flexibility for after-school, evening, and weekend event coverage.

 

Core Responsibilities

 

  • Injury Management: Evaluate and assess athletic injuries, administer first aid, and act as the primary medical responder for home and away athletic events.

 

  • Rehabilitation & Prevention: Develop individualized rehabilitation plans, apply preventative measures (e.g., taping and bracing), and assist with fitness or conditioning programs.

 

  • Concussion Protocols: Coordinate baseline testing (such as ImPACT) and manage Return-to-Play protocols under Massachusetts Department of Public Health guidelines.

 

  • Administration: Maintain medical records, manage the athletic training room budget, track insurance claims, and verify physicals in collaboration with school nurses.

 

  • Collaboration: Act as the central communication link between athletes, parents, coaches, school administration, and physicians.

 

 

Qualifications & Requirements

 

  • Licensure: Must be licensed (or eligible for licensure) to practice as an Athletic Trainer in the state of Massachusetts.

 

  • Certification: Current certification through the Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers and valid CPR/AED/First Aid certification.

 

  • Education: Typically requires a Bachelor's or Master's degree from a CAATE-accredited Athletic Training or Sports Medicine program.

 

  • Background Checks: Successful completion of state-mandated background screenings, including SORI, CORI, and fingerprinting.

 

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with MIAA (Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association) rules and sports medicine procedures.

 

Work Environment & Schedule

 

  • Seasonality: Typically a 10-month position aligning with the academic and high school sports calendar (August through June).

 

  • Schedule: Non-traditional hours are the norm. The schedule often requires on-site presence during afternoon practices, weeknight games, and weekend tournament coverage. Performs other duties as needed, or required, or directed by the Director of Special Education

 

Certification by the Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers
Massachusetts State Licensure as an Athletic Trainer (or eligibility for licensure by start date)
Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer


Bachelors or Master’s Degree from a CAATE accredited program


Successful fulfillment of CORI, and mandatory fingerprinting background screenings in accordance with Massachusetts state mandates


Proven expertise in the oversight of head injury protocols and the execution of urgent medical response strategies


Experience working in the high school or collegiate athletic settings preferred


Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent or Director

of Athletics may find appropriate and in conformity with state licensure requirements
Familiarity with MIAA rules and regulations per Sports Medicine Coverage and Athletic procedures
