What are the responsibilities and job description for the Security Supervisor position at Peabody Essex Museum?
The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) is seeking a full-time Security Supervisor to join our dedicated security team. Security Supervisors protect the museum’s exceptional collections and exhibitions by providing training, direction, and daily operational support to security staff, as well as guidance and assistance to visitors and contractors. Duties will be performed at the main museum building and historic properties in Salem as well as at the Hawkes Collection Center in Rowley, MA. The successful candidate will join an established team of supervisors that works alongside the PEM Security Operations Center (SOC) to maintain a constant security presence throughout both campuses. This position reports directly to the PEM Campus Supervisor and works under the oversight of the Associate Directors and Director of Security.
The Security Supervisor’s duties include, but are not limited to, opening and closing museum buildings, training and supervising Security Department staff, inspecting and patrolling building interiors and exteriors, responding to emergencies, administering first aid, and properly documenting all non-routine occurrences. They also participate in the Security Department’s rotation of week-long on-call coverage. Security Supervisors are qualified to fulfill the duties of all junior and equivalent security positions as needed, such as Gallery Officer, Precinct Specialist, Campus Patrol Officer, or SOC Operator. Training and uniforms will be provided.
This is a forward facing role that requires regular interaction with the public and the ability to present an approachable, professional demeanor at all times. Candidates must demonstrate excellent communication skills and a proven capacity to remain calm and decisive during an emergency or conflict. Candidates must also have a track record of collaborating, adapting, and problem solving as part of a team.
Candidates must be able to sit, walk or stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to climb stairs. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be willing to consent to annual checks of their driving record and license status. The applicant will also need to be committed to work evening, weekend, and special event shifts.
5 years of progressive security experience is required. Prior supervisory experience is required. An Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and related experience) is preferred. Conversational fluency in a language other than English is preferred. Experience in a museum, cultural institution or non-profit organization is a plus. Customer service experience is a plus. The hourly range for this role is $21.63 to $23.67 commensurate with experience, totaling 40 hours per week.
