TITLE: MECHANIC, CERTIFIED
DEPARTMENT: Transportation
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must possess ASE Certification (or equivalent certification) as bus fleet mechanic in at least one area.
- Must possess a valid Arizona Driver’s License – Class “B” Commercial Driver License with P (passenger) and S (school bus) endorsements.
- Must possess a valid Arizona IVP fingerprint clearance card.
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- A minimum of five (5) years vehicle maintenance experience is preferred.
- Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
JOB GOALS:
The Certified Mechanic works under and takes direction from the Head Mechanic in maintaining the district's school buses, other vehicles and mechanical equipment. The Certified Mechanic anticipates mechanical failures that could result in the delay of student transportation or present a safety hazard to operators, passengers or bystanders and assists in the implementation of vehicle and equipment maintenance programs as directed by the Head Mechanic or Director of Transportation.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following tasks are essential for this position. This list is not inclusive of all responsibilities. Individuals may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed.
- Complies with HIPAA and FERPA related confidentiality requirements.
- Develops positive relations with students, parents, school staff and the public.
- Performs mechanic’s duties in support of the maintenance and repair of district school buses, other vehicles and equipment.
- Provides instruction and guidance to uncertified mechanics in the resolution of mechanical issues and completion of all required equipment maintenance.
- Helps to maintain records on all vehicles in accordance with local and state requirements.
- Reports bus damage, unrelated to fair wear and tear, to the Director of Transportation or Head Mechanic for corrective action.
- Assists in the implementation of effective maintenance programs related to vehicle servicing and repair.
- Operates a school bus in the transportation of students in accordance with the duties related to a school bus driver whenever such assistance is required.
- Attends appropriate workshops and training programs as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
- Assists the Head Mechanic or Director of Transportation with researching specifications, capabilities and associated costs when purchasing new or used buses or equipment.
- Promotes safety techniques and philosophies in the garage by using proper tools and maintaining clean surroundings.
- Takes responsibility for proper care of all transportation, tools, equipment and supplies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
Knowledge of:
- District policies, operations and organization.
- Interpersonal skills including tact, courtesy and diplomacy.
- Communication (telephone, email, etc.) etiquette.
- Related materials, methods and tools to maintain automotive and mechanical equipment including buses, passenger vehicles, and miscellaneous utility vehicles.
- Arizona Administrative Code Title 13, Chapter 13 - School Buses (Minimum Standards).
Skill and Ability to:
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Establish work priorities to meet schedules and timelines.
- Engage and encourage communication skills while interacting with supervisors, staff, students, etc. to exchange information.
- Implement solutions to complex problems.
- Perform Certified Mechanic’s duties as directed.
- Operate a school bus.

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Director of Transportation in accordance with the provisions of Governing Board policy for evaluation of classified personnel.
TERMS OF
EMPLOYMENT: 12 Months
SALARY: Salary for the position is set according to the Classified Salary Schedule determined by the Governing Board.
