Job Overview

The Paxton Park District is a nonprofit organization formed in 1965, serving approximately 4,500 residents by providing quality parks, recreational facilities, and community programs. The Paxton Park District is dedicated to the responsibility to provide a broad spectrum of recreational and leisure activities and services. We are seeking a motivated, dependable, and hands-on maintenance lead to oversee the maintenance, operation, and appearance of all Park District parks, facilities, athletic fields, and grounds.

This position is responsible for directing daily maintenance operations, supervising seasonal maintenance staff, ensuring safe and attractive public spaces, and maintaining Districts equipment and facilities The Maintenance Lead plays a key role in creating a safe and enjoyable environment for our community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Grounds & Park Maintenance

  • Plan, prioritize, and perform daily maintenance of all parks, athletic fields, and playgrounds.
  • Prepare and maintain baseball, softball, soccer, and other athletic fields for practices, games, and tournaments.
  • Maintain landscaping including trees, mow, shrubs, and irrigation systems.
  • Remove litter and debris from all Park District properties.

Facility Maintenance

  • Conduct routine inspections of buildings, shelters, restrooms, sidewalks, parking lots, and other facilities.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs to doors, windows, flooring, and other facility components.
  • Coordinate repairs with outside contractors when necessary.
  • Maintain cleanliness and functionality of all facilities.

Playground & Equipment Safety

  • Inspect playground equipment, park amenities, bleachers, benches, fencing, and recreational equipment.
  • Complete repairs when necessary.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable safety standards and regulations.
  • Document inspections.

Equipment & Fleet Maintenance

  • Operate and maintain mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, chainsaws, hand tools, and other maintenance equipment.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintain maintenance logs and equipment service records.
  • Report equipment repair needs promptly.

Public Safety & Risk Management

  • Ensure parks and facilities remain safe for public use.
  • Identify and correct hazardous conditions.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, Illinois Department of Labor, and Park District safety requirements

Staff Supervision

  • Supervise, train, schedule, and evaluate seasonal maintenance employees
  • Assign daily work responsibilities and monitor completion of projects.
  • Promote a safe, respectful, and productive work environment.
  • Provide guidance and instruction on equipment operation and safety procedures.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and inspection reports.
  • Monitor inventory of maintenance supplies and equipment.
  • Recommend equipment purchases and capital improvements.
  • Communicate maintenance needs and project updates to the Recreation Director.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Three (3) years of experience in grounds, facility maintenance, landscaping, or related field.
  • Valid Illinois Drivers License required.

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting up to 75 pounds.
  • Frequent walking, standings, bending, kneeling, climbing, and reaching.
  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, rain, snow.
  • Safely operate heavy equipment, power tools, and maintenance vehicles.

Work Schedule

  • Monday-Friday
  • Up to 35 hours per week (hours may vary)

Pay: $19.00 per hour
