The Middle School Nurse promotes student health, safety, and wellness by providing comprehensive nursing services that support students' physical, emotional, and academic success. Working collaboratively with administrators, families, physicians, and school staff, the nurse manages student health needs, responds to emergencies, oversees medication administration, develops individualized health plans, maintains required health records, and ensures compliance with New York State Education Department regulations. The nurse also provides health education, supports students with chronic and acute medical conditions, contributes to crisis response and school safety planning, and fosters a healthy learning environment for all students.
- Provide direct nursing care and emergency medical response.
- Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and district policy.
- Develop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and collaborate on IEPs and Section 504 Plans as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate health records, immunization compliance, and state-mandated reporting.
- Communicate with families, healthcare providers, and school personnel regarding student health needs.
- Monitor and support students with chronic illnesses, allergies, diabetes, asthma, seizures, and other medical conditions.
- Conduct health screenings as required by New York State.
- Promote health education, disease prevention, and wellness initiatives.
- Participate on multidisciplinary teams, crisis response, and attendance/support meetings.
- Ensure compliance with New York State Education Law, NYSED regulations, and district policies.
Job Qualifications
- Current New York State Registered Professional Nurse (RN) license required.
- School Nurse Teacher certification preferred or willingness to obtain if required.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
- Strong communication, organizational, and collaborative skills.
- Experience in pediatric, school, or community health nursing preferred.
