What are the responsibilities and job description for the Flagger position at Pavement Surface Control?
Purpose of Position
Flaggers are responsible for stopping traffic, advising motorists of any delays and keeping vehicles in the proper lane through construction work zones. The flagging operation provides protection for other maintenance workers and the public in accordance with applicable traffic safety, regulations and directives.
Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience: Must be 18 years of age or older. High school diploma/GED. Experience preferred but not required. Must have reliable transportation.
Licensure/Credentials: Washington State Flagger Certification card. Valid Washington State driver’s license. Must obtain a First Aid Certification and a Department of Transportation medical card, within 2 weeks of hire.
Working Conditions
Physical Demand: Requires normal/corrected vision and hearing to normal range Work is performed outdoors at construction sites, maintenance facilities and outside environments with exposure to inclement weather. Moderate physical demands: strength sufficient to lift and move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment.
Equipment Used: 2-way radios, traffic control devices, safety equipment, flags, and stop/go paddles.
Hours of Work: On call. Hours of work vary due to project timelines.
Essential Job Functions
1. Load/unload traffic control trucks with items such as traffic signs, stands, cones, and sandbags.
2. Set up/remove construction signs, cones, and other traffic control items at the job site.
3. Ensure that all proper safety equipment procedures are followed.
4. Flag motorists to warn them of any obstacles or repair work ahead.
5. Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of proper safety gear and practices.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of highway and street signs.
- Ability to communicate verbally with co-workers.
- Ability to recognize dangerous traffic situations and warn workers in sufficient time to avoid injury.
- Ability to understand and apply safe traffic control practices in sometimes stressful or emergency situations.
- Ability to receive and communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously.
- Ability to work well alone and as a member of a group.
- Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time in all types of weather conditions.

Pay: $19.00 - $21.00 per hour
