Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) is seeking to hire a Decontamination Program Assistant for the 2026 field season to support the operations and maintenance of boat decontamination stations for AWI’s flagship Aquatic Invasive Species Spread Prevention Program.

Job Description: The Decontamination Program Assistant sets up approximately 29 boat decontamination units in the spring, maintains these units throughout the summer months, and assists with post-season break-down and storage of these units in the fall. This position assists in training seasonal Watercraft Inspection Stewards in the operation of the boat decontamination units and supports full time staff in monitoring and correcting field staff performance. This position is an essential role in the success of the program by ensuring that boat decontamination units remain fully operational throughout the season.

Hours and Pay: The Decontamination Program Assistant works 8-10 hours per day, up to 40 hours per week, starting on or after March 20 and extending to October 31. Weekend and holiday work is required and extensive travel around the Adirondack region is required. A company vehicle will be provided. This position is paid an hourly rate starting at $22.50 per hour. The Decontamination Program Assistant is required to attend a paid, multi-day online training from May 11 -14 and assist in the facilitation of an in-person training held on the campus of Paul Smith’s College from May 18 - 21.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Decontamination Program Manager in coordinating and executing all elements of AWI’s watercraft decontamination program including reporting, regular maintenance, safety procedures, and pre- and post- season logistics, by assisting in the deployment of gear to the field and storing it at the close of the season.
  • Support the Decontamination Program Manager in servicing pressure washer units and supporting equipment including pressure washers, water reclamation systems, water transfer pumps, personal protective equipment, signs, and safety equipment.
  • Assist in initial and ongoing training and performance evaluation of Watercraft Inspection Stewards.
  • Support the Decontamination Program Manager in the set up and dismantling of boat decontamination sites throughout the Adirondacks.
  • Maintain regular communication with staff using assigned cell phone and software applications.
  • Support and coach field staff to ensure quality program messaging and the integrity of the decontamination services AWI provides by ensuring staff follow all decontamination protocols (e.g., use of hot water when applicable and performing lower unit flushes).

Qualifications: Required

  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Novice to intermediate skills in the following fields: mechanical, plumbing, electrical and carpentry.
  • Experience troubleshooting small engines, installing and constructing wooden ramps, attaching waterlines between water reservoirs and pressure washers, and towing trailered pressure washers to work sites.
  • Experience driving full-sized pickup trucks and connecting and towing heavy trailers at highway speeds.
  • Experience running gasoline powered motorized equipment.
  • Capable of working independently, high level of motivation.
  • Experience working outdoors and ability to work in inclement weather.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and maneuver wheel mounted pressure washing units and water collection pads.
  • Ability to spend an extended amount of time on your feet, bending, and crouching to reach under vessels.
  • Driver’s license and driving record acceptable to PSC insurance carrier and AWI, which will enable authorization to drive College-owned vehicles.
  • Ability to work all weekends & holidays.

Qualifications: Preferred

  • Coursework in natural resources, environmental studies, environmental science, education, recreation, or related fields.
  • Familiarity with aquatic invasive species.
  • Familiarity with outdoor water-based recreation to include boating, skiing, fishing, paddling, swimming, wildlife viewing, etc.
  • Experience managing or coaching employees.
  • Good communication skills, with prior experience working with a diverse public.
