Museum Manager/Assistant to the Executive Director

On-site, part time. 26 hours per week.

$23/hour


The Museum Manager (MM) will work on-site at the Paul Revere Museum of Discovery and Innovation (MoDI) - 2 Rolling Mill Way, Canton, MA - on a regular schedule of three days per week. Subject to the scheduling discretion of the Executive Director, these days may alternate as follows: Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday one week, followed by Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday the next week.

The Paul Revere MoDI is open to the public Thursdays and Fridays from 1pm to 7pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm. Wednesdays will be reserved for special tours – a Wednesday workday will run from 10am to 4pm. A workday in the museum is seven hours long - from 30 minutes prior to opening to 30 minutes after closing. On workdays the MM is responsible for opening and closing the MoDI, and supervising the Ambassadors and Volunteers who are on duty that day. Duties in the MoDI include selling tickets, memberships, and merchandise via Square, engaging with and assisting visitors, and leading group tours.

The remaining 5 contracted hours per week include managing field trips, private tours, and evening events – as well as maintaining the volunteer schedule. If there are no special events on any given week, some contracted hours may be completed remotely, with the approval of the Executive Director.

The MM will at times post images and video clips on our social media pages, as well as advertisements for special events.

The MM is responsible for communicating with contractors and other appropriate parties regarding everyday maintenance, and potential and ongoing projects at the museum and Heritage Site.

The MM will provide logistical and operational support for museum fundraising events and similar functions hosted by or benefiting the MoDI and Heritage Site, whether held on-site or at an outside venue.

The MM may be called upon to draft, proofread and edit documents, and archive those documents in the document management system. In coordination with the Executive Director, the MM will prepare spending proposals for supplies, furniture, memberships and other categories as needed and execute approved spending.

The MM will be in charge of administrative support for board meetings one evening a month.

Skills and competencies:

Strong verbal and written communication and customer service skills. Strong planning and organizational skills, and ability to work successfully independently.

Must be able and willing to supervise a team of employees and volunteers. Must be comfortable interacting with museum visitors of all ages.

The work involves periods of stooping, walking, and standing. May be required to climb ladders, lift boxes, move furniture, and set up/break down exhibits. The MM will need to climb stairs and gain access to closet and storage spaces, as well as lift objects weighing up to 30 pounds.

As needed, the MM will attend to routine exhibit maintenance and general upkeep of the indoor and outdoor premises under management by RSHTC, including the outdoor restrooms and shed.

Visual demands require routinely reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes; ability to use computer and other office equipment.

Strong technical skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, web and social media platforms. Familiarity with data base management, website management and graphics design preferred.

Bachelor’s degree and experience in the fields of education and/or museum studies preferred.

Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events, as needed



Satisfactory completion of a background (CORI/SORI) check.
