Fleet Mechanic Shop Foreman/Manager

The Fleet Mechanic Shop Foreman/Manager is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of a vehicle maintenance facility for a fleet of cars, trucks, vans, or specialized equipment. This leadership role combines hands-on technical expertise with strong supervisory and administrative skills to ensure all vehicles are maintained safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory standards. The Foreman/Manager oversees a team of mechanics, manages shop workflow, controls costs, and maintains high standards of quality and safety.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

• Supervise, mentor, and evaluate a team of fleet mechanics and technicians
• Schedule work assignments, shifts, and shop coverage to meet operational demands
• Conduct regular team meetings, performance reviews, and training sessions
• Enforce safety protocols and promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement

Maintenance & Repair Operations

• Oversee diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance on all fleet vehicles and equipment
• Ensure timely completion of work orders while maintaining quality standards
• Manage emergency repairs and respond to roadside assistance needs
• Implement and monitor preventive maintenance programs to minimize downtime

Shop Administration & Compliance

• Manage shop inventory, parts ordering, and vendor relationships
• Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, and compliance documentation
• Ensure adherence to DOT, OSHA, EPA, and other applicable regulations
• Monitor shop equipment condition and coordinate repairs or replacements
• Prepare and manage the shop budget, track expenses, and identify cost-saving opportunities

Quality Control & Reporting

• Perform quality inspections on completed work
• Analyze fleet performance data and recommend maintenance strategies
• Generate reports on vehicle uptime, repair costs, and technician productivity
• Coordinate with fleet operations, safety, and procurement teams

Required Qualifications

Experience

• 5 years of experience as a journeyman-level fleet or automotive mechanic
• 2 years of supervisory or lead mechanic experience (preferred)
• Strong background in heavy-duty trucks, diesel engines, or commercial fleet maintenance highly desired

Technical Skills

• Master-level knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, transmissions, brakes, and suspension
• Proficiency with diagnostic tools, scanners, and fleet management software
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints
• Welding, fabrication, and machining skills a plus

Education & Certifications

• High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Technical degree in Automotive/Diesel Technology preferred
• ASE Master Technician certification (or equivalent) strongly preferred
• Valid driver’s license with clean driving record (CDL preferred)
• EPA 609 Refrigerant Handling certification (if applicable)

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and work in various positions (bending, kneeling, standing)
• Comfort working in shop environment with exposure to noise, fumes, and varying temperatures
• Manual dexterity and good vision for detailed mechanical work
