Position Summary
The Fabrication Shop Foreman is responsible for supervising daily fabrication shop operations, coordinating production schedules, ensuring quality standards, maintaining safety compliance, and leading shop personnel to meet productivity goals. This role oversees fabrication projects from material preparation through final assembly while ensuring efficient workflow, equipment performance, and adherence to company standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate daily activities of fabrication shop employees
- Assign work tasks and monitor production schedules to ensure deadlines are met
- Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and work orders
- Ensure fabricated products meet quality and dimensional specifications
- Oversee welding, cutting, fitting, grinding, and assembly operations
- Train, mentor, and evaluate fabrication personnel
- Enforce company safety policies and OSHA compliance standards
- Conduct daily safety meetings and promote a safe work environment
- Monitor material usage and coordinate inventory needs with purchasing
- Inspect tools and equipment to ensure proper operation and maintenance
- Troubleshoot production issues and implement corrective actions
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and other departments
- Maintain accurate production and labor records
- Assist with estimating labor hours and production planning
- Ensure housekeeping and organization standards are maintained throughout the shop
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school preferred
- 5 years of fabrication experience required
- 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of metal fabrication, welding, and shop practices
- Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings
- Familiarity with fabrication equipment, tools, and machinery
- Understanding of OSHA and workplace safety regulations
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Proficient with measuring tools and fabrication calculations
- Forklift and overhead crane experience preferred
Preferred Skills
- MIG, TIG, and Stick welding knowledge
- Experience with structural steel, sheet metal, or custom fabrication
- Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement experience
- Basic computer skills for reporting and scheduling
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds regularly
- Ability to work in a fabrication shop environment with exposure to heat, noise, dust, and fumes
- Must be able to wear required PPE including safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and steel-toe boots
