Job Title: School Nurse
General Description: Protects and promotes the health, facilitates the normal development, and supports the academic success of all students. Provides a safe and healthy environment in order to maximize students’ learning.
Requirements:
- Must possess a valid license, in good standing, as a nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Must maintain current certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid from a recognized provider.
- Supervised nursing experience in community health, child health, or a related specialty preferred.
Reports To: Building Principal
Essential Job Functions:
- Provides direct nursing care to students and staff by administering medication, first aid, emergency health care, and nursing care..
- Observes students on a regular bases to monitor illness and provide early detection of communicable diseases, child abuse, substance abuse, mental illness, and chronic illness; makes referrals to other professional staff members and community agencies, if needed; and communicates findings to parents/guardians as appropriate.
- Participates in planning interventions or accommodations for students that address health-related barriers to accessing the learning environment.
- Provides health counseling and education to students to assist them in developing self-care skills and decision-making regarding their health needs and behaviors.
- Serves as a resource to teachers and staff at the assigned school regarding the health needs of students.
- Participates in school based committees regarding the health and wellness of students.
- Ensures compliance with state health requirements for school attendance, which may include monitoring immunization status, performing health assessments/screenings, and providing case management.
- Ensures that sanitary standards of the school’s health clinic are being met and maintains OSHA standards regarding bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious body materials.
- Maintains proper documentation and health records on all students within the assigned school and prepares/submits reports as required.
- Acts as member of the eligibility/child study team and assists with formulating an appropriate health care plan for special needs and medically fragile students at the assigned school.
- Maintains compliance with Individualized Education Plans (IEP) / Individualized Health Care Plans (IHP), 504s, and may perform specialized nursing care.
- Complies with laws, regulations, protocols, and school board policies/procedures as they apply to school health services.
- Requisitions needed supplies and equipment for the health clinic at the assigned school.
- Maintains professional competence and keeps abreast of new developments in the health field.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
