Pathology Reference Laboratory
San Antonio, TX Full Time
POSTED ON 7/25/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 11/22/2026

About the Role

We are seeking a Histology/Grossing Technician to join our reference laboratory. In this hybrid role you will prepare and process human tissue—both fixed and fresh—and gross biopsies and simple surgical specimens while assisting the pathologists’ assistants and maintaining the gross area. Ideally, you bring histology experience and qualify to gross independently.

Available Shifts

  • Full-Time: Monday–Friday, 8:00 PM – 4:30 AM, plus Saturday grossing once every 3 weeks.
  • Training (new hires): Monday–Friday, rotating through progressively later shifts over the first 4 weeks (one week each), then settling into the regular 9:00 PM – 5:30 AM shift:
  • Week 1: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Week 2: 11:30 AM – 8:00 PM
  • Week 3: 2:30 PM – 11:00 PM
  • Week 4: 6:30 PM – 3:00 AM

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and process human tissue specimens, both fixed and fresh, in accordance with laboratory guidelines and grossing protocols
  • Gross biopsies and simple surgical specimens (including gallbladders and appendices) accurately and within turnaround targets, and triage large specimens (opening, inking, breadloafing) for the pathologists’ assistants
  • Assist the pathologists’ assistants with specimen handling and grossing tasks as needed
  • Maintain accurate records and specimen documentation to support quality and accreditation requirements
  • Perform general gross area maintenance, including cleaning, restocking, and equipment care
  • Follow all safety, HIPAA, and laboratory compliance protocols when handling biological specimens
  • Participate in rotating Saturday grossing coverage with other gross technicians

Qualifications

  • Prior histology or grossing experience is strongly preferred; candidates without it may be trained on the job. Either way, all candidates must meet the gross-tech eligibility requirements below—this is a hard requirement for the role and cannot be waived
  • Minimum gross-tech eligibility (required) — you must meet ONE of the following three paths:
  • Path 1 — Degree: An earned associate degree (or higher) in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
  • Path 2 — Equivalent coursework: At least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that include either (a) 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, or (b) 24 semester hours of science courses with at least 6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
  • Path 3 — Documented training: At least 3 months of documented laboratory training in pathology during which you performed high-complexity testing.
  • Comfortable handling human biological tissue, both fixed and fresh
  • Ability to follow laboratory guidelines and grossing protocols precisely
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to documentation accuracy
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills; ability to make sound decisions under pressure
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced laboratory environment
  • Must provide transcripts or diploma, a copy of your resume, and any laboratory training documentation (if applicable)
  • Must pass a background check

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods during shift
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for both fine and gross motor tasks, including grossing, specimen handling, labeling, and block filing
  • Ability to lift, carry, and put away supplies and packages weighing up to 40 lbs
  • Visual acuity sufficient to read fine print on reagents, slide labels, blocks, requisitions, and computer screens accurately
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, lab coat, and eye protection
  • Manual dexterity to handle small tubes, containers, and laboratory equipment safely
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and shifting priorities
  • Ability to adjust priorities throughout the shift to meet specimen turnaround times and case deadlines

Benefits

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life and disability insurance
  • 401(k) with company matching
  • Paid time off
