What are the responsibilities and job description for the Derm Histotechnician position at Pathology Reference Laboratory?
Job Description
The overnight histology technicians are responsible for processing, embedding, and cutting, as well as participating in maintaining adequate QC systems. Focus will be on dermatology specimens and training other histotechs to cut derms, and other bulk work as needed. Ability to gross derms is a plus.
Must have experience in dermatology specimens: processing, embedding, and microtomy.
Follows direction of the histology supervisor and managers, who assign tasks and runs workflow.
Performance must be consistent with the laboratory’s policies and procedures to ensure timely availability of slides for the pathologists.
Coordinates with other team members.
Participation in offsite lab coverage may be required.
Ensures compliance with CAP and safety requirements.
Starting pay for this position is $25.00/hour $2.00/hour overnight shift differential.
Open full time shift:
- 10:00 pm - 6:30 am Monday through Friday
Qualifications
Knowledge of histology lab procedures including cryostat, embedding, microtomy, and staining. Knowledge of gross room preferred.
Licenses & Certifications: ASCP certification (preferred)
Education:
- High school or equivalent
- Associate degree related to histology (recommended)
Experience:
- 5 years of laboratory experience
- Dermatology specimen processing (required)
License/Certification:
- ASCP certified (recommended)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods during shift
- Frequent use of hands and fingers for embedding, cutting, typing, writing, staining, filing, lab maintenance and upkeep
- Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs (e.g., specimen boxes, supply packages, reagents, blocks, slides)
- Visual acuity sufficient to read specimen labels, requisitions, computer screens, slide labels, block labels, and reagent labels accurately
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, lab coat, and eye protection
- Manual dexterity to handle laboratory material, containers, blocks, slides, supplies, and laboratory equipment safely
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and shifting priorities based on deadlines
