What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Pharmacy position at Pathfinders Executive Search?
Director of Pharmacy Compliance
Location: Pittsburgh, PA (On-Site) Compensation: $140,000–$180,000 base salary annual bonus
About the Opportunity
Our client is a well-established, fast-growing long-term care and specialty pharmacy organization serving healthcare communities across multiple states. Built over more than a decade, the organization is known for clinical excellence, operational reliability, and a genuine commitment to doing things the right way. As it continues to expand — including into new compounding services — it's investing in senior compliance leadership to make sure that growth is matched step-for-step by regulatory discipline.
We're looking for an experienced pharmacy compliance leader to step into a high-visibility role reporting directly to the Chief Pharmacy Officer. This is a chance to lead a dedicated compliance team and own the organization's regulatory, audit, and risk program — building on a solid existing foundation while shaping it into something even more effective for the future.
This is, at its core, a regulatory and audit leadership role. The organization's top priority is deep expertise in pharmacy compliance, multistate regulation, and audit readiness. Compounding knowledge (USP <795>, <797>, and <800>) is a real and growing part of the job as the organization expands its compounding capabilities — but it's not a hard requirement. Candidates with strong working familiarity with compounding regulations are especially welcome, and more experience there is always a plus, but the organization is fully prepared to develop that expertise further for the right compliance leader.
What You'll Do
- Serve as the organization's go-to expert on pharmacy regulations across every state it operates in — and there will be more states to add as the business grows.
- Maintain a comprehensive, state-by-state regulatory requirements matrix, keeping pace with pharmacist and technician licensure rules, labeling requirements, floor-stock regulations, and other evolving state-specific rules.
- Maintain oversight of resident and nonresident pharmacy licenses, permits, registrations, pharmacist-in-charge requirements, and renewal deadlines.
- Design and lead a rigorous internal audit program — including self-assessments at every location and unannounced mock audits — to keep every pharmacy inspection-ready.
- Prepare locations for state Board of Pharmacy inspections, maintain a strong working relationship with NABP, and stay ahead of CMS and DEA guidance.
- Lead regulatory investigations, corrective action plans, and responses to any compliance findings.
- Lead and develop a small, dedicated compliance team — and take an already-established program and evolve it into a more scalable, effective structure.
- Partner closely with Pharmacy Operations, Quality, Clinical, Informatics, HR, and Legal to embed compliance into everyday business processes.
- Build and deliver compliance training for pharmacy leaders and teams, and maintain the policies, licenses, and documentation that demonstrate adherence.
- Provide oversight of sterile and nonsterile compounding requirements as the organization grows its compounding capabilities, applying working knowledge of USP <795>, <797>, and <800> alongside vendors and pharmacy teams.
What You Bring
- A genuine track record of owning — not just supporting — pharmacy compliance, regulatory affairs, or audit work. You can speak to decisions you personally drove, not just processes you were part of.
- Strong, demonstrated knowledge of multistate pharmacy regulation, along with the judgment to navigate ambiguity when requirements differ — or are unclear — from state to state.
- Experience building or running compliance audit programs, including self-assessments and mock or surprise audits.
- Comfort preparing for and responding to Board of Pharmacy, CMS, FDA, or DEA inspections and inquiries.
- Familiarity with compounding regulations (USP <795>/<797>/<800>) is a genuine plus — the more, the better — but hands-on compounding experience is not required.
- A pharmacist license is strongly preferred. Licensed pharmacists bring built-in regulatory fluency that translates well into this role, even without a formal compliance title.
- Proven people-leadership experience, with the ability to lead and develop a small, high-functioning team.
- A genuinely curious, critical-thinking mindset — someone who's energized by regulatory complexity rather than worn down by it, and who's comfortable saying, "this is gray, here's how I'd approach it."
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex regulatory requirements for both frontline teams and executive leadership.
Why This Role
- Lead compliance strategy for an organization in active growth mode, with real influence over how the function evolves.
- Step into a role with an established foundation — you won't be starting from zero, but you'll have genuine room to build something more effective.
- Competitive compensation: $140,000–$180,000 base salary, plus an annual bonus (approximately $15,000 at the director level).
- A collegial, in-office culture with reasonable flexibility, and relocation assistance available for the right candidate.
