School Monitor
Position:
Under the direction and supervision of the Assistant Principal, the school monitor will assist in maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive school environment for students, staff, and community patrons. The School Monitor will assist in enforcing the adherence to school behavior codes and in minimizing the loss of class time by monitoring student activity throughout the school day. This position will also include supervising students staying after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays (late bus days). Walking the hallways, patrolling the school property, and supervising in-house suspensions are typical activities of the School Monitor position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or completion of sufficient education to successfully perform the duties
- Background in psychology and/or knowledge regarding student behavioral issues
- Experience working with adolescents
- Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying
Responsibilities:
Overview: High school is a fast-paced environment requiring good eyesight and a calm demeanor. Duties require prolonged standing and/or walking, ascending/descending multiple stairs, and short amounts of time outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Essential Duties:
- Routine observation, supervision, and care of high school students and school property in accordance with district policies to promote an educational climate which is safe and conducive to learning.
- Educates students regarding school rules and encourages appropriate student conduct, reporting violations/behavioral incidents to the Assistant Principals; connects students requiring help with appropriate staff, as needed.
- Supervises the orderly flow and travel of students to ensure students are in authorized areas, are acting safely and appropriately, and are not missing excessive class time.
- Escorts students and/or visitors to and from designated locations as requested; prevents unauthorized persons from entering the building.
- Maintains a high level of professionalism, and ethical and confidential behavior, in performing daily duties.
- Other duties as assigned by administration.
Performance responsibilities:
- Ability to take direction and to work cooperatively with all stakeholders in addressing issues.
- Ability to understand school rules/expectations found in the Student Handbook and other documents.
- Ability to work with/understand adolescents, including anticipating/de-escalating potential confrontations.
- Knowledge of best practices in safety and building security.
- Ability to maintain a professional, calm, and authoritative manner when challenged by students or others.
- Ability to report verbally and/or in writing concerns or problems, including 51A reports for suspected abuse or neglect.
Compensation:
Hourly position, based on education and experience, projected range $24 - $34
Position Type:
This position will likely encompass 182 days–the 2 days before school is in session and the 180 student day calendar. The School Monitor will report to work only when school is in session for students and will not work on school holidays or during school vacation periods.
Probable work hours:
- Monday/Wednesdays/Fridays from 7:15 a.m. - 3:05 p.m.
- Tuesdays/Thursdays from 7:15 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Effective Date of Position: Immediately
