SPECIAL EDUCATION BUS AIDE

JOB GOAL:

To provide students with assistance during their bus ride to/from school activities, due to medical, behavioral or other characteristics, which create some risk to the student or other students on the bus, and the overall safety of the bus ride.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Required: High school diploma or equivalent, CPR/AED, first aid training and other training as required (will be provided if needed).
2. Preferred: Experience with children who have medical, behavioral, cognitive or other conditions, which necessitate additional supervision during the ride.
3. Responsibility of employee to obtain and maintain all training(s), certificate(s), approval(s), etc. and provide documentation to the business office before expiration date of said document(s).
4. The ability to lift 75 pounds.
5. Required to have a physical presence at the designated job site each scheduled work day.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist in the loading and unloading of students.
2. Assist bus driver in supervision and safety of students, while enforcing all established rules.
3. Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly bus.
4. Attend all meetings and training as required by administration.
5. Assist the bus driver in the preparation of reports as needed.
6. Follows standard medical procedures as demonstrated and described by the SJCISD Nurse.
7. Supervises students who are medically involved, and takes necessary emergency steps.
8. Assists the bus driver with students who have behavioral difficulties under the direction of the Pathfinder Principal.
9. Implement behavioral management strategies as assigned to minimize any dangers to student(s).
10. Cooperates with the bus driver and other staff to achieve safe transportation of students.
11. Is available for consultation with other school staff such as administrators, social worker or school psychologist in order to develop the necessary plans to maintain safe bus transportation.
12. Must be able to secure wheelchairs, pick up students and place them in car seats, hook up harnesses or seat belts as needed and help students walk on and off the bus.
13. Must be able to work the wheelchair lift, both electronically and manually.
14. Must know how to evacuate the children from the bus in case of emergency or accident.
15. Must be certified in CPR/AED and first aid and other training as required (will be provided if needed).
16. Must follow the cell phone policy.
17. To keep all student, parent and staff information confidential.
18. Good communication skills and the ability to work well with students, parents and staff members.
19. Will be assigned weekend and mandatory time, when needed.

1. Perform other duties as assigned by the St. Joseph County ISD Administrators.

ASSESSMENT:  Facilities and Transportation Supervisor

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  minimum 176 days.  Salary and conditions of employment are determined by                                                                                           the Board of Education.
