Job Summary

The Independent Living Instructor provides individualized training and support to adults with developmental disabilities to increase independence, self-sufficiency, and community participation. Services are delivered in accordance with California Code of Regulations, Title 17, Section 56714, and the Welfare and Institutions Code, ensuring that instruction is person-centered, outcome-based, and tailored to each client’s Individual Program Plan (IPP).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct training and support in independent living skills, including but not limited to:
    • Money management and budgeting
    • Meal planning and preparation
    • Health, hygiene, and personal care
    • Community access and public transportation use
    • Home maintenance and safety
    • Employment readiness and self-advocacy skills
  • Implement teaching strategies consistent with each client’s Individual Service Plan (ISP) and Individual Program Plan (IPP) objectives.
  • Maintain accurate daily documentation of client progress, attendance, and any incidents in compliance with Title 17 record-keeping standards.
  • Encourage and facilitate client choice, dignity, and self-determination, in accordance with person-centered planning principles.
  • Support clients in identifying and accessing community resources, including housing, healthcare, recreation, and transportation.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings, case reviews, and coordination with Regional Center Service Coordinators and other agencies.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all Welfare and Institutions Code provisions protecting client rights.
  • Report any suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation as a mandated reporter under Welfare and Institutions Codes.
  • Attend ongoing training and professional development as required by Title 17 and agency policy.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, or related field preferred.
  • At least one (1) year of experience providing direct services to adults with developmental disabilities or similar population.
  • Valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, and current auto insurance.
  • Must pass DOJ/FBI background check and TB clearance prior to employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, maintain professional boundaries, and document client progress accurately.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of Title 17 regulations governing Independent Living Services.
  • Understanding of Welfare and Institutions Code §4648.55, emphasizing individualized, outcome-oriented training.
  • Strong interpersonal and instructional skills for working with adults with diverse support needs.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement skill-based lessons in natural environments (home and community).
  • Commitment to promoting client rights, independence, and inclusion.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work is primarily performed in clients’ homes and community settings.
  • Frequent local travel required.
  • May involve light lifting (up to 25 lbs), walking, standing, and household activity participation.
