Emergency Medical Technician (all levels of credentialing)

Under general supervision, performs skilled and technical work in operating an approved mobile medical unit, rescuing victims and administering emergency medical care to patients on site and while in route to hospital. Work involves responding to the scene of emergency and non-emergency calls, applying necessary medical treatment to sick or injured persons, and transporting persons to a medical facility. Employee is responsible for performing in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques, but must exercise considerable independent judgment to assess conditions of patients and apply short-term relief. Employee is exposed to the normal hazards of emergency rescue work, including risk of exposure to infectious diseases. Reports to the Emergency Medical Service Director.

Responds to emergency calls as a mobile medical unit driver or attendant, performs necessary rescue work; administers necessary emergency medical care requiring the use of suction units, immobilization equipment, syringes and medications, and automatic cardiac/defibrillator monitors; requests dispatch of specially trained medical personnel, as necessary.

Emergency Medical Technicians trained in approved training programs and certified by the Office of Emergency Medical Services may perform any of the following procedures if allowed by the County Emergency Medical Services System in which they function: (1) patient assessment; (2) basic life support techniques in accordance with the American Heart Association or American Red Cross including airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; (3) Oxygen administration; (4) hemorrhage control; (5) treatment for shock; (6) bandaging and dressing soft tissue injuries; (7) splinting fractures and dislocations; (8) treatment of injuries to the head, face, eye, neck, and spine; (9) treatment of injuries to the chest, abdomen and genitalia; (10) provision of basic life support for medical injuries; (11) assisting in normal and abnormal childbirth; (12) treatment of injuries as a result of exposure to heat and cold; (13) treatment of burns; (14) lifting and moving patients for transfer to a medical facility; and (15) extrication of patients from confined areas.


 

Responds to non-emergency calls, such as requests to transport patients from hospitals to their homes or from a local medical facility to a specialized medical center. 

Participates in a continuous training program to improve competence in medical clinical work and in ambulance service and operation; maintains knowledge of new or modified operational protocols and procedures; studies street and road patterns and networks of the County in order that future runs may be made with minimum difficulty and delay.

Ensures documentation of calls to the Department; completes run reports for each response call for which he/she is responsible.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Maintains cleanliness and performs minor maintenance of Emergency Medical Service equipment, vehicles and facilities.

Cleans and organizes stock room; organizes and stocks medical equipment and supplies.

Performs other related work as required.

Applicants must have: 1) High School Diploma or G.E.D.; 2) Current pre-hospital certification at the application level by the North Carolina Office of EMS; 3) Possession of a valid driver license; 4) Good physical agility and ability to perform duties; 5) Ability to pass local medical board, if necessary and provide documentation of continuing education hours for verification; 6) Current course completions preferred in a prehospital trauma program, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support or other certifications appropriate to level of credentialing. 
Fiscal Yar 2026 hiring ranges based on years of EMS experience are:
-EMT               Grade 14 @$38,756 - $54,268 ($18.63 - $26.09/hr.) built-in FT OT
-AEMT             Grade 17 @$43,613 - $61,272 ($20.96 - $29.46/hr.) built-in FT OT
-Paramedic     Grade 20 @$48,469 - $68,276 ($23.30 - $32.83/hr.) built-in FT OT

Working knowledge of emergency medical procedures and tech­niques. 

Working knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in the emergency care of patients and victims of accidents. 

Working knowledge of County geography and of the location of roads and streets within the County. 

Working knowledge of procedures of extrication, movement of patients, rescue techniques, transportation and psychological needs of a patient. 

Working knowledge of radio communications equipment. 

Skill in diagnosing a victim's condition and applying emergency medical care. 

Skill in the operation of common office machines.

Ability to respond quickly and calmly to emergency situations. 

Ability to safely drive an ambulance under emergency conditions at high rates of speed. 

Ability to lift substantial weight. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. 

Ability to deal tactfully, courteously and firmly with the general public. 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
