Production Painter

John Deere Kernersville's Paint department carries the responsibility of providing

hydraulic excavators that meet the highest quality standards in the industry for

paint appearance and coating durability. To that end, the paint department is

comprised of two major paint systems: North Paint and South Paint.

The North Paint system is responsible for painted Track Frames, Main Frames and

Cylinders. Major equipment includes drop download and unload stations, a

manual 4 stage wash system, dry off oven, manual paint booth and infrared

curing oven.

The South Paint system is responsible for painting booms and arms and is referred

to as the "Skinny System" due to its narrow shape. This is a fully automated

system, including a 5 stage automatic wash system, Robotic painting booth, with

robots featuring rotating "bells" for improved paint transfer efficiency, a manual

touch up area and dry off oven, infrared curing oven and sanding booth for paint

surface appearance. This is a two pass paint system.

Load Station:

• Sections of the conveyer will lower and raise at paint load, which provides

for a safer operation by allowing technicians to remain standing on the

floor.

• Operators load components in a specific sequence to maximize capacity of

the paint line and to meet assembly schedule requirements.

• Operators have the choice of selecting one or two pass. One pass is for

components that require topcoat only. Two pass is for components that

require primer and a topcoat.

• DH utilizes "densification" which maximizes the number of components

that can be hung on a single load bar. This process improves the capacity of

the paint line

Unload Station:

• Sections of the conveyer will lower and raise at paint unload, same as paint

load.

• Operations performed:

o De-Masking, Rust Protection, Counterweight Foam Application, and

Quality Checks

Masking Station:

• Preparation of all machined surfaces prior to paint application

• Cleaning of all surfaces

• Unique masking aids for different mode

Wash Booth Station:

• Components are processed in this station to promote paint

adhesion.

• The wash booth is like a manual car wash booth.

• Components are cleaned using a 2 or 4 step process. Components

that already have a primer coat require 2 steps. Bare metal

components require 4 steps.

• The 2-step process applies an alkaline cleaner followed by a hot

water rinse.

• In addition to the 2 steps, the 4-step process applies an iron

phosphate wash followed by a second hot water rinse.

• After washing, the components are dried in gas fired convection

oven, which prepares them for masking

Paint Booth Station:

• Manual paint operation

• Paint booth temperature is controlled to maintain maximum

conditions for paint application and adhesion.

• A downdraft air flow system is used to control paint overspray by

forcing the overspray into a water collection system below the

floor.

• Provides Clean Environment for Paint Application

• Painters use man lift stations to gain access to all areas requiring

paint

1st Shift hours: 7:00 A.M. – 3:30 P.M. (Standard 8 hrs.)

Monday- Friday

3rd Shift hours: 10:30 PM – 7:00 A.M. (Standard 8 hrs.)

Sunday night- Thursday nigh
