What are the responsibilities and job description for the Middle School Assistant Volleyball Coach position at Parsons Unified School District 503?
PRIMARY PURPOSE
Provide instruction and coach students to develop skills and ability to excel in assigned sport(s). Contribute to education program as a whole and to growth of students involved in athletics.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification(s)/License(s):
- Bachelor’s degree (not required for Rule 10 Coaches)
- Valid Kansas teaching certificate (not required for Rule 10 Coaches)
- Current first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillator (AED) certificate or training
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures
- Knowledge of Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) rules
- Ability to instruct and supervise student athletes
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching (Required course completion for Rule 10 Coaches)
Experience:
- Coaching experience or participant experience in sport assigned (preferred).
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Duties and Responsibilities
- Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes in the sport assigned.
- Assist with the management and supervision of athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.
- Work with other members of school staff to plan and implement instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletes.
- Assist with the establishment of performance criteria for competition and evaluation of students’ athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis. Model performance criteria and physical movements required for successful student performance of sport.
- Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assist with coordinating of travel arrangements to out-of-town events.
- Ensure compliance with all Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) rules.
- Assist with the development and coordination of a continuing evaluation of coaching program and make suggestions based on findings.
- Accompany and supervise student athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports both at-home and on out-of-town trips.
- Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
- Encourage, by example and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.
- Maintain open communication with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
- Assist in selection of equipment and instructional materials.
- Assist with the compilation, maintenance, and filing of all reports, records, and other documents required.
- Assist with the process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all campus athletic equipment.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Comply with all district policies, rules, and regulations.
- Be a positive role model for students; support mission of school district.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Requires the ability to maintain emotional control while under stress and in stressful situations.
- Requires the ability to frequently work prolonged and irregular hours.
- Requires the ability to frequently stand for prolonged periods of time.
- Requires the ability to frequently walk and use the physical movements associated with sport(s) assigned.
- Requires the ability to use standard athletic equipment, standard office equipment including computer and peripherals and other instructional equipment, and automated external defibrillator (AED).
- Requires the ability to frequently kneel, squat, bend/stoop, grasp/squeeze, twist, or reach.
- Requires the ability to frequently lift and carry items 20 lbs. or less.
- Requires the ability to work and concentrate in noisy and crowded environments.
- Requires the ability to work inside and outside with exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather.
- Requires the ability to frequently travel in district and statewide.
- Requires timeliness and regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.
